OAKLAND, Calif. The Head-Royce boys JV basketball team scored 10 straight points to erase most of a 12-point second-half deficit, but Firmly Rooted held on for a 49-47 win Tuesday night in a summer game. Head-Royce committed 20 turnovers, and Firmly Rooted turned them into 17 points. The Jayhawks fell to 2-6 and have now lost five games in a row.

Head-Royce scored first when Owen finished a feed from John Wheeler, and the Jayhawks led 6-2 after a basket by Wheeler off a turnover and a second-chance bucket by Idan. The opening half featured three lead changes and two ties. Makaio hit a 3-pointer to put Head-Royce back ahead 11-9, and Idan's basket made it 13-9. Firmly Rooted tied the game at 13, and after Makaio answered, the visitors scored the next seven points to lead 20-15. Idan hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Sanjay late in the half, and Head-Royce trailed 24-22 at the break.

Firmly Rooted pulled ahead after halftime. Idan's basket cut the deficit to 31-28, but the visitors answered with a 6-0 run, with two of those baskets coming off turnovers, to lead 37-28. Owen hit a 3-pointer, but Firmly Rooted kept scoring and went up 47-35 on back-to-back baskets, its biggest lead of the game.

The Jayhawks then scored 10 in a row. Sanjay scored off an assist from Idan, and Idan added a second-chance basket, a free throw and a layup off a turnover. Wheeler then hit a second-chance 3-pointer, set up by PJ, to cut the lead to 47-45. Firmly Rooted answered with a basket, and Owen's jumper made it a two-point game again, but Head-Royce never got the ball back with a chance to tie.

Idan led Head-Royce with 22 points and 10 rebounds, making 9 of 19 shots and all three of his free throws. Owen added 9 points and two assists. Wheeler had 5 points, three assists and a team-high five steals. Sanjay pulled down eight rebounds and handed out three assists, and Makaio scored all 5 of Head-Royce's bench points on 2-of-3 shooting.

Head-Royce won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Firmly Rooted 34-25 and grabbing 15 offensive rebounds. That edge led to an 11-6 advantage in second-chance points. The Jayhawks made 20 of 50 shots (40 percent), and Firmly Rooted made 20 of 47 (42.6 percent). The gap came from turnovers, where Firmly Rooted had a 17-8 edge in points off turnovers, and from the free throw line, where Firmly Rooted made 6 of 13 and Head-Royce went 3 for 3.

Head-Royce, now 2-6 this summer, will try to end its five-game losing streak in its next game.
