Jayhawks fall to Oakland Rebels 47-44 despite Sanjay's 19 points

OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce built a 12-point lead, then lost it during a 14-0 run by the Oakland Rebels and fell 47-44 at home Tuesday. The loss dropped the Jayhawks to 2-4 this summer and extended their losing streak to three games.

The Jayhawks started fast with a 10-0 run. They made four straight free throws, and then Sanjay scored three baskets in a row off turnovers, two of them on passes from Owen. Oakland answered with two baskets and a free throw. Owen kept Head-Royce in front with a second-chance basket and four free throws, and the Jayhawks led 18-9.

Sanjay then took over. He hit back-to-back baskets for a 22-11 lead and made four straight free throws to push the margin to 26-14, Head-Royce's largest lead of the game. Jayan scored on an assist from Sanjay to make it 28-19.

That was the Jayhawks' last basket for a long stretch. Oakland scored the next 14 points, tying the game at 28 and going ahead 33-28 on a basket off a turnover. Owen ended the drought with a 3-pointer on a pass from PJ to pull Head-Royce within 33-31. The Rebels answered with five straight points, and they later stretched the lead to 46-36, their largest of the game.

Head-Royce closed strong. Sanjay scored, then set up Owen for a basket that cut the deficit to 46-40. After an Oakland free throw, Sanjay scored on a pass from Owen. Owen then scored off a turnover on an assist from Makaio to make it 47-44, but the Jayhawks got no closer.

Sanjay finished with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting and went 5-for-7 at the free-throw line. He added five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Owen scored 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting and made all four of his free throws. He also had five rebounds, three of them offensive, and three assists. PJ scored four points on a 3-pointer and a free throw and added five rebounds and a team-high three steals.

The offensive glass decided the game. Oakland grabbed 12 offensive rebounds to five for Head-Royce and outscored the Jayhawks 9-2 in second-chance points. Head-Royce shot 40.6 percent (13-of-32), while Oakland shot 42.5 percent. The Jayhawks committed 14 turnovers to Oakland's 10 but still scored more points off turnovers, 8-6. Head-Royce made 16 of 19 free throws, and Oakland made 11 of 26. The starters scored all 44 of the Jayhawks' points. With the loss, Head-Royce is 2-4 this summer.
