OAKLAND, Calif. EBC broke open a two-point game with a 13-0 run and beat the Head-Royce boys junior varsity 63-46 in a summer game Tuesday, June 17. The Jayhawks (2-3) committed 19 turnovers, and EBC turned them into 14 points.

EBC scored the first two baskets for a 4-0 lead before Head-Royce answered with an 8-0 run. Jayan hit a second-chance 3-pointer, and Makaio followed with a 3-pointer off an assist from PJ to give the Jayhawks their first lead at 6-4. Jayan added a basket for an 8-4 edge, Head-Royce's largest of the game. EBC came right back with a 7-0 run, helped by consecutive baskets off turnovers, to go ahead 11-8. The Jayhawks never led again.

Head-Royce kept the game within reach from the perimeter. EBC stretched its lead to 26-16, but Jayan and John Wheeler each hit 3-pointers to keep the Jayhawks close. Wheeler then scored five points in a short stretch, and Jayan converted a turnover into a basket that pulled Head-Royce within 35-34. After a basket by LeAdagio, Jayan hit another second-chance 3-pointer off a PJ assist to cut the deficit to 41-39.

EBC took control from there. It scored the next 13 points, including two baskets off turnovers, to build a 54-39 lead. Makaio ended the drought with a 3-pointer assisted by Jayan, but EBC answered with a 7-0 run that made it 61-42, its largest lead at 19 points. Wheeler scored on a putback and Jayan added the final basket of the game.

Jayan led Head-Royce with 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting, including 5 of 11 from 3-point range. Wheeler added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting with four rebounds, three of them offensive, and two steals. Makaio scored eight points with two 3-pointers and had a team-high four steals. PJ grabbed a team-high six rebounds and had two assists to go with three points, and LeAdagio finished with two points and four rebounds.

The shooting numbers favored EBC, which made 28 of 48 shots (58 percent) while Head-Royce made 18 of 44 (41 percent), including 8 of 24 from 3-point range. EBC made only 2 of 7 3-pointers and 5 of 15 free throws, so 26 of its 28 field goals were 2-pointers. The Jayhawks outrebounded EBC 19-12 and held a 10-2 edge in second-chance points. The turnover gap outweighed those edges: Head-Royce had 19 turnovers to EBC's three, and EBC held a 14-2 advantage in points off turnovers. All 46 Head-Royce points came from the starters.

Head-Royce fell to 2-3 this summer and has lost two straight games.
