OAKLAND, Calif. The Head-Royce boys junior varsity team fell to San Marin JV 45-38 on Saturday, June 14. The visitors made five 3-pointers and used two long scoring runs to pull away, and the loss dropped the Jayhawks to 1-1 this summer.
Head-Royce scored first on a PJ putback and went up 4-2 on a LeAdagio basket. That two-point edge was the Jayhawks' biggest lead of the day. The teams were tied three times early, the last at 6-6 on a PJ bucket, before San Marin JV went ahead for good. Owen and Azaan scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to 11-10, but San Marin JV answered with an 11-0 run that included a 3-pointer and ended with a basket off a turnover. That made it 22-10, the visitors' biggest lead of the game.
The Jayhawks answered with a 7-0 run of their own. Makaio scored on a second-chance basket, John Wheeler hit a second-chance 3-pointer on an assist from PJ, and LoRyan scored to make it 22-17. San Marin JV kept answering from the perimeter, but PJ kept Head-Royce close. He scored four straight Jayhawk baskets, three of them off turnovers. The second of those cut the deficit to 30-27, and the last made it 35-31.
San Marin JV then pulled away again with a 7-0 run, starting with a 3-pointer and adding two baskets for a 42-31 lead. Head-Royce made one more push. Jayan hit a 3-pointer, Makaio turned a turnover into a basket on an assist from Owen, and LoRyan scored to pull the Jayhawks within 42-38. Head-Royce did not score again, and San Marin JV finished the game with three free throws.
PJ led Head-Royce with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added five rebounds, two steals and an assist without a turnover. LoRyan had a team-high seven rebounds, four of them offensive, and scored four points. LeAdagio made 2 of 3 shots for four points and had a team-high three steals. Makaio scored four points off the bench with three rebounds and a block, and Wheeler and Jayan each scored three points.
Both teams made 18 field goals, and Head-Royce shot 38 percent (18-of-47) to San Marin JV's 39 percent (18-of-46). The game was decided at the 3-point line and the free throw line. The Jayhawks made 2 of 16 3-point attempts, while San Marin JV made 5 of 15. San Marin JV also made all four of its free throws, and Head-Royce did not attempt one. The Jayhawks did win several other categories. They outrebounded the visitors 27-23, including 10 offensive rebounds, and outscored them 7-4 on second-chance points. They forced 11 turnovers with nine steals, won the points off turnovers battle 8-2 and got 11 points from their bench. San Marin JV had only two assists.
The Jayhawks are now 1-1 this summer.
