OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce never trailed Wednesday, holding off El Cerrito High 42-38 in a 2025 summer game to improve to 12-7. Jack had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and the Jayhawks held El Cerrito to 2-of-20 shooting from 3-point range.
Head-Royce scored the first seven points of the game. Jack opened the scoring, Idan added a basket off a turnover and a free throw, and Jack capped the 7-0 run with a second-chance basket. El Cerrito answered and pulled within one point twice, at 9-8 and 11-10, but it never drew even. The game had no ties and no lead changes.
The Jayhawks then pulled away with a 9-0 run. Jack started it with a free throw and a 3-pointer off a turnover, assisted by Nick. Lo made a free throw, Tua scored a second-chance basket and Jack finished a feed from Lo for a 20-10 lead. Jackson later hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Tua, and Jack scored on consecutive trips, the second on a pass from Sam, to make it 27-14. That 13-point margin was the largest of the game.
El Cerrito kept coming. It scored 13 of the next 18 points and cut the deficit to 32-27, but Head-Royce answered each push. Nick hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Jack for a 35-27 lead, and Sanjay followed a El Cerrito basket with a 3-pointer set up by Jackson to make it 38-29. Tua made two free throws, and Jack scored off a turnover for a 42-33 lead. El Cerrito closed with a 3-pointer and a basket off a turnover, and the game ended 42-38.
Jack led the way on both ends. He made 8 of 15 shots, grabbed 11 rebounds, including two on the offensive glass, and added two steals and an assist without a turnover. He also was whistled for five fouls. Idan scored six points with four rebounds. Sanjay went 2-for-3 from the field for five points and pulled down six rebounds. Nick added five points, two assists, a steal and the team's only block, and Tua had four points, six rebounds (three offensive), two assists and two steals.
Head-Royce shot 33 percent (16-for-48) from the field, while El Cerrito shot 30 percent (14-for-47). The difference showed up behind the arc, where the Jayhawks made 5 of 17 attempts and El Cerrito made 2 of 20. Head-Royce won the rebounding battle 36-28 and had nine offensive rebounds to El Cerrito's four. The Jayhawks forced 10 turnovers and committed nine, and they finished with eight steals, two each from Jack, Tua and Lo. El Cerrito made all eight of its free throws and held a slim 8-7 edge in points off turnovers. The bench contributed four points: three from Jackson and one from Lo.
The win improved Head-Royce to 12-7 this summer.
