OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce opened with a 14-0 run but lost 46-45 to Oakland Tech on Wednesday. Oakland Tech won the rebounding battle 31-23 and made 10 of 11 free throws, including the last two points of the game. The loss dropped the Jayhawks to 11-7 in summer play and extended their losing streak to two games.
The Jayhawks made four 3-pointers in their first five baskets. Jack hit two of them, Idan and Tua added one each, and Idan also scored inside for a 14-0 lead. Lo made a free throw and a 3-pointer to push the lead to 18-5. Oakland Tech answered with a 6-0 run to get within 18-11 and kept chipping away. It took its first lead at 24-23 on a second-chance basket.
Head-Royce went back in front on baskets by Idan and Nick. After Oakland Tech tied it at 27, Idan made two straight 3-pointers, the second off a turnover, for a 6-0 run and a 33-27 lead. A Nick basket made it 35-29, but Oakland Tech scored the next seven points and led 36-35 on a 3-pointer. A Head-Royce free throw tied the game, and Tua scored to put the Jayhawks up 38-36. Oakland Tech then scored six straight points, starting with another second-chance basket, and led 42-38.
The Jayhawks closed the gap at the free-throw line. Tua made two free throws, and after Oakland Tech made two of its own to lead 44-40, Jack made two more. Tua then hit a 3-pointer off a turnover to give Head-Royce a 45-44 lead. Oakland Tech made two free throws on its final scoring trip to win the game.
Idan led Head-Royce with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range. Jack added 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, went 2 for 2 from deep and had four rebounds, three of them offensive. Tua scored 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting with two assists. The three starters combined for 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting, while the rest of the team went 3 for 28. Nick had a team-high five rebounds and Sanjay had a team-high three assists. Off the bench, Lo scored four points with two steals and a block.
The two teams shot about the same from the field. Head-Royce made 32.6 percent (15 of 46), and Oakland Tech made 33.3 percent (16 of 48). The Jayhawks took care of the ball, committing four turnovers to Oakland Tech's nine and scoring nine points off turnovers while giving up none. But Oakland Tech outscored Head-Royce 6-0 in second-chance points and made 10 of 11 free throws, while the Jayhawks made 7 of 10. Head-Royce went 8 for 27 from 3-point range, and its bench scored four points.
Head-Royce is now 11-7 this summer.
