OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce fell to Bay School 53-42 on Sunday in summer play, as the visitors outrebounded the Jayhawks 30-17 and scored 40 of their 53 points on two-point baskets. The loss dropped Head-Royce to 8-5.
The lead changed hands often early. Bay School scored first off a turnover before Nick hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Jack for a 3-2 lead. Sanjay answered a Bay School basket with a second-chance 3-pointer, Idan connected from deep on a feed from Tua, and two Sanjay free throws put Head-Royce up 11-7, its largest lead of the day. Bay School went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-11. Nick's second 3-pointer, set up by Idan, made it 14-13, and after Bay School went back in front at the line, Jackson hit a 3-pointer off a Lo assist for a 17-15 edge. That was the last Head-Royce lead in a game that had seven lead changes and three ties.
Bay School took control from there with a 7-0 run for a 22-17 lead. The Jayhawks hung close for a stretch. Baskets by Tua and Jack, the second on a putback chance, cut the deficit to 26-23. After a Sanjay free throw made it 32-26, Bay School scored six straight, including a basket off a turnover, to lead 38-26. Sanjay and Lo scored to trim the gap to 38-30, but Bay School answered with another 6-0 run, four of those points coming at the free throw line, and led 44-30, its largest margin of the game at 14.
Head-Royce did not go quietly. Jack made two free throws, and Nick scored eight points in the closing stretch: a 3-pointer off a turnover on an assist from Clayton, a second-chance basket by Jack in between, another Nick 3-pointer set up by Clayton and a Nick basket off a turnover that pulled the Jayhawks within 50-42. Bay School closed the scoring with a basket and a free throw.
Nick led Head-Royce with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and added two steals without a turnover. Sanjay scored 10 points, made all three of his free throws and added four rebounds and a block. Jack finished with eight points, a team-high six rebounds and two assists while going 4-for-4 at the line. Idan had three points, three blocks and two assists. Off the bench, Jackson added three points and two rebounds, and Clayton had two assists and a steal.
The team numbers told the story. Head-Royce shot 33 percent (14 of 42) and 7 of 26 from 3-point range, while Bay School shot 45 percent (22 of 49). Bay School attempted only four 3-pointers, making two, but went 20 of 45 inside the arc and grabbed 12 offensive rebounds. The Jayhawks limited the damage on the glass, holding a 7-6 edge in second-chance points. Each team committed seven turnovers, and Head-Royce held a 5-4 advantage in points off turnovers. Both teams went 7 of 7 from the free throw line, and the Head-Royce bench scored five points.
Head-Royce is now 8-5 this summer.
