OAKLAND, Calif. Idan hit a 3-pointer to put Head-Royce back in front after East Side Prep had erased a 12-point deficit, and the Jayhawks held on for a 46-43 boys basketball win on Saturday. Head-Royce is now 7-4 in the 2025 summer season.
Head-Royce scored the first 11 points of the game. Idan opened the scoring with a 3-pointer off a pass from Tua, and Nick followed with a 3-pointer assisted by Idan. Jack added a second-chance 3-pointer and then scored on a feed from Tua to make it 11-0. After East Side Prep got on the board, Nick hit his second 3-pointer, this one assisted by Jackson, for a 16-5 lead.
East Side Prep answered with a 6-0 run that cut the lead to 16-11. Idan scored off a turnover, and after the visitors pulled within 18-14, Head-Royce went on a 6-0 run of its own. Jack made two free throws and scored on another assist from Tua, and Sanjay made two free throws for a 24-14 lead. Two free throws by Tua pushed the margin to 28-16. Later, Jack scored seven straight Head-Royce points to make it 35-23, which matched the Jayhawks' largest lead.
The visitors kept coming. Nick scored on a pass from Sanjay for a 37-27 lead, and Jackson made two free throws to make it 39-30. East Side Prep then scored eight straight points, finishing the run with a basket off a turnover, to pull within 39-38. Idan scored on a second-chance basket to make it 41-38, but East Side Prep scored the next five points on a field goal and three free throws. That tied the game at 41 and then put the visitors ahead 43-41. Head-Royce answered right away. Nick found Idan for a 3-pointer and a 44-43 lead, and Tua made two free throws for the final points of the game.
Jack led Head-Royce with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, made all three of his free throws and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, three on the offensive end. Idan scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, and added four rebounds, two steals and a block. Nick scored eight points on two 3-pointers and a basket. Tua did not make a field goal but ran the offense with seven assists, five of them to Jack, and went 4-for-4 at the line. Sanjay had five rebounds (four offensive), two assists and two steals. Jackson scored all four of the team's bench points.
Head-Royce went 11-for-11 at the free throw line, while East Side Prep went 13-for-14. The Jayhawks shot 36.6 percent (15-of-41) from the floor, and East Side Prep shot 37.8 percent (14-of-37). Head-Royce won the rebounding battle 25-18, grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and held a 7-6 edge in second-chance points. The Jayhawks also had 12 assists to East Side Prep's four. Head-Royce committed seven turnovers, East Side Prep committed eight, and the Jayhawks had six steals.
The win moved Head-Royce to 7-4 this summer.
