OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce came back from a 14-point deficit and took its only lead of the game in the fourth quarter, but Fremont High answered with a 3-pointer and held on for a 45-42 win on Friday. The Jayhawks shot 28.6 percent from the field and made 3 of 27 attempts from 3-point range. The loss dropped them to 6-3 and was their second in a row.
Fremont High scored the game's first seven points on a basket, a 3-pointer and a second-chance basket before Tua put Head-Royce on the board with a basket off a pass from Nick. The visitors scored twice off turnovers and pushed the lead to 20-6, their largest of the game. Nick answered with a basket, and Sanjay's second-chance basket and Jack's basket off an assist from Lo cut the gap to 22-12. Tua made two free throws, and baskets by Jack and Nick made it 26-18, but Fremont High added a basket and a free throw to lead 29-18 at halftime.
Head-Royce opened the second half with a 6-0 run. Jack scored, Tua finished a pass from Jack and the Jayhawks added another basket to make it 29-24. Owen hit a second-chance 3-pointer off a feed from Jackson to cut the deficit to 31-27, and Fremont High led 33-27 after three quarters. Jack scored off a turnover on an assist from Sanjay to start the fourth, and a Head-Royce free throw made it 33-30. Tua's second-chance 3-pointer, set up by Sanjay, cut the lead to 35-33. Nick then scored off a pass from Lo and added a free throw to make it 37-36. Fremont High hit a 3-pointer, Nick answered with a basket off a feed from Tua, and Tua's 3-pointer off a pass from Nick put the Jayhawks in front 41-40. Fremont High took the lead back right away with a 3-pointer. Nick made a free throw to get within 43-42, and Fremont High made two free throws to close the scoring.
Tua led Head-Royce with 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting, including two 3-pointers, and made both of his free throws. He also had two assists and a steal. Jack posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and shot 5 of 11 from the field. Nick added 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Off the bench, Lo grabbed nine rebounds, six of them on the offensive glass, and added three steals, two assists and a block. Sanjay pulled down three offensive rebounds and had two assists.
The Jayhawks won the rebounding battle 34-30 and had a 15-7 edge on the offensive glass, which led to a 10-6 advantage in second-chance points. They forced 11 turnovers and had seven steals while committing eight turnovers, but they scored only 2 points off turnovers to Fremont High's 4. Fremont High shot 18 of 46 (39.1 percent) and made 5 of 20 from 3-point range. Head-Royce made 7 of 15 free throws, and its bench scored 4 points.
Head-Royce is 6-3 and has lost two straight games.
