OAKLAND, Calif. Cardinal Newman made eight 3-pointers and closed the game on an 11-0 run to beat Head-Royce 49-30 on Sunday, June 8, handing the Jayhawks their second loss of the 2025 summer season. Head-Royce fell to 6-2.
The only tie came early. Cardinal Newman scored first, and Idan answered with a second-chance basket on an assist from Jack to make it 2-2. Cardinal Newman then made three straight 3-pointers, the last one off a turnover, during a 9-0 run that put it ahead 11-2. Jack scored inside, and Tua later hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 14-7. A free throw by Sanjay made it 16-8. Head-Royce trailed 18-10 before Cardinal Newman went on a 7-0 run, finished by a 3-pointer, to lead 25-10.
The Jayhawks cut into the lead from there. Nick scored on an assist from Idan, and Idan hit a 3-pointer off a turnover, set up by Sam, to make it 27-15. Idan followed with a basket and a free throw to make it 29-18. After Tua's basket made it 31-20, Idan hit another 3-pointer on a feed from Nick, and Tua scored off a turnover to bring Head-Royce within 33-25. Cardinal Newman answered with five straight points to lead 38-25. Sanjay's second-chance basket and a 3-pointer from Nick, both assisted by Tua, cut the lead to 38-30.
That was as close as Head-Royce got. Cardinal Newman made two more 3-pointers, went 3-for-3 at the free-throw line and added a basket off a turnover to finish on an 11-0 run. Head-Royce did not score again, and the 19-point margin at the final buzzer was the game's largest.
Idan led Head-Royce with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, including 2 of 7 from 3-point range, and scored the team's first basket. Tua added 9 points on 4-of-7 shooting with two assists and a steal. Nick scored 5 points and grabbed three rebounds. Sam pulled down a team-high five rebounds, and Jack had three offensive rebounds to go with 2 points. Off the bench, Sanjay had 3 points and three rebounds, which accounted for all of Head-Royce's bench scoring.
The 3-point line decided the game. Cardinal Newman went 8 of 19 from long range for 24 points, while Head-Royce went 4 of 18. Cardinal Newman shot 46.2 percent overall (18 of 39) to Head-Royce's 34.3 percent (12 of 35). Cardinal Newman also had more assists (10 to 7) and scored 7 points off turnovers, while Head-Royce scored 5. The rebounding was nearly even: Cardinal Newman had 19 rebounds and Head-Royce had 18. Each team grabbed seven offensive rebounds and scored 4 second-chance points.
Head-Royce committed eight turnovers and forced five. The Jayhawks went 2 of 3 from the free-throw line, and Cardinal Newman went 5 of 6. The loss drops Head-Royce to 6-2 this summer.
