OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce never trailed, and after Dougherty Valley wiped out a 17-point deficit, the Jayhawks made three free throws in the final sequence to hold on for a 42-39 win Sunday. Jack posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds as Head-Royce improved to 6-1 in the 2025 Summer season and ran its winning streak to five games.
Head-Royce took control early. Jack scored the game's first basket on a feed from Sam, and after a Dougherty Valley free throw the Jayhawks went on an 11-0 run to lead 13-1. Idan hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Tua, Tua hit a 3-pointer off a turnover, Jack scored off another turnover on a pass from Tua, and Sam capped the burst with a 3-pointer set up by Nick.
The lead kept growing from there. Idan hit his second 3-pointer, again on a Nick assist, to make it 28-14. Jack added a basket and a free throw, and Sanjay's second-chance basket pushed the margin to 35-18, the largest of the day. Two Sanjay free throws kept Head-Royce ahead 37-23.
Dougherty Valley then started scoring off Head-Royce turnovers. The visitors scored the next five points, both baskets coming off turnovers, before Silas scored off a turnover on a pass from Nick for a 39-28 lead. Dougherty Valley answered with 11 straight points, three of its baskets in that stretch coming off turnovers, and the last one tied the game at 39, the only tie of the afternoon. Jack broke the tie with a free throw, and Sam made two more to finish the scoring at 42-39.
Jack made 6 of 11 shots from the field and grabbed three offensive rebounds to lead Head-Royce inside. Idan added 8 points and made 2 of 3 from 3-point range. Sanjay gave the Jayhawks 6 points off the bench, making all four of his free throws and pulling down two offensive rebounds. Nick handed out a team-high five assists and added 4 points, a steal and a block. Sam finished with 5 points and two assists, and his two free throws put the game away. Silas scored 2 points, and the Head-Royce bench combined for 8.
The glass made the difference in a game in which both teams shot about the same. Head-Royce shot 15 of 39 (38.5 percent), and Dougherty Valley shot 15 of 38 (39.5 percent). The Jayhawks outrebounded the visitors 25-13, including 9-4 on the offensive boards, and outscored them 6-2 on second-chance points. Head-Royce also held a 9-2 edge in assists and went 8 of 11 at the free throw line, while Dougherty Valley made 6 of 8. Each team committed eight turnovers, but Dougherty Valley scored 13 points off them to Head-Royce's 7, and that fueled the comeback.
With the win, Head-Royce is 6-1 and has won five straight games.
