OAKLAND, Calif. Ygnacio Valley controlled the glass and closed on a 12-0 run to beat Head-Royce 73-53 on Friday, dropping the Jayhawks to 1-1 in the 2025 summer season. Ygnacio Valley outrebounded Head-Royce 36-22, grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and turned them into 10 second-chance points.
Ygnacio Valley scored the game's first four points before the Jayhawks answered from the perimeter. Nick hit a 3-pointer off a feed from Sam, and Sam returned the favor with a 3-pointer of his own, assisted by Nick, to tie the game 6-6. That was the only tie of the night, and Head-Royce never led. Ygnacio Valley answered with an 11-0 run to go up 17-6, then added a 7-0 burst later in the half that stretched the margin to 29-10.
Head-Royce kept chipping away. Down 32-12, the Jayhawks scored seven straight points on a Nick 3-pointer and two free throws each from Jack and Idan. Later, trailing 41-26, Head-Royce put together its best stretch of the game with a 9-0 run. Nick hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the first assisted by Sam, and Tua followed with a 3-pointer off a pass from Nick to cut the deficit to 41-35.
Ygnacio Valley pushed the lead back to 10, but the Jayhawks stayed close. Tucker hit a 3-pointer off an assist from Nick and scored a second-chance basket to make it 58-50, and Silas answered an Ygnacio Valley 3-pointer with one of his own, assisted by Tucker, to make it 61-53. Head-Royce did not score again. Ygnacio Valley closed on a 12-0 run that began with a 3-pointer and included three baskets off turnovers, and it finished with its largest lead of the game, 20 points.
Nick led Head-Royce with 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, and added a team-high five assists and three blocks. Tucker scored nine points on 4-of-7 shooting and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jack had nine points and four rebounds and made all three of his free throws. Tua scored eight points with two 3-pointers, three assists and two steals, and Sam added six points on two 3-pointers. Silas came off the bench for three points and four rebounds.
The Jayhawks moved the ball well, with 14 assists on 19 made field goals, and went 5 for 5 at the free throw line. They shot 35.8 percent from the field (19 of 53) and 10 of 29 from 3-point range, while Ygnacio Valley shot 49.1 percent (28 of 57) and made 8 of 17 from beyond the arc. Ygnacio Valley had 11 turnovers and Head-Royce had 13, but Ygnacio Valley outscored the Jayhawks 13-6 in points off turnovers. Head-Royce also trailed 10-4 in second-chance points, and its bench scored three points.
Head-Royce is now 1-1 on the summer season after its first loss.
