OAKLAND, Calif. Morgan R. had 25 points and 20 rebounds, and Head-Royce owned the glass in a 59-39 win over Fortune Early College on Tuesday. The Jayhawks (21-4) won their fourth straight game and outrebounded the visitors 57-33.
Fortune Early College scored first on a pair of free throws by H. G., and that 2-0 edge was its only lead of the game. Melina M. and Elena K. scored on assists from Morgan R. to put Head-Royce in front. After Fortune tied it at 4-4, the Jayhawks went on a 10-0 run. Morgan R. scored eight points in that stretch on two field goals and four free throws, and Abigail K. finished it with a basket for a 14-4 lead.
Head-Royce pushed the margin to 22-12 when Kalia K. scored on a feed from Leila H. Then Fortune made its push. The visitors scored eight straight points, and Z. R. capped the run with a 3-pointer to pull within 22-20. The Jayhawks answered with six in a row, four from Morgan R. and a basket from Melina M. Morgan R. added a second-chance basket late in the half, and Head-Royce led 32-23 at halftime.
The Jayhawks pulled away after the break. That late basket by Morgan R. started a 7-0 run, and she and Abigail K. finished it early in the second half for a 37-23 lead. Leila H. hit a 3-pointer and made two free throws in a 6-0 burst that made it 43-25. A later 7-0 run, capped by five points from Melina M., built the biggest lead of the game at 50-26. Head-Royce outscored Fortune Early College 27-16 in the second half. Abigail K. scored the last basket off a turnover, assisted by Geneva W. L.
Morgan R. led the way with her double-double of 25 points and 20 rebounds, six of them offensive. She also had five assists, three blocks and a steal without a turnover, and she made 8 of 9 free throws. Abigail K. added 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting and four rebounds. Melina M. went 3 for 3 from the field and 2 for 2 at the line for eight points, and she added five rebounds, five steals and two assists. Leila H. scored seven points and had five assists.
Head-Royce shot 35 percent from the field and held Fortune Early College to 24 percent (13 of 55). The Jayhawks grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and outscored the visitors 8-4 in second-chance points. The bench added 19 rebounds, with seven from Ella S., and Kalia K. had four points and six rebounds. Head-Royce made 10 steals, and Fortune Early College finished with 14 turnovers and two assists. H. G. and Z. R. led Fortune Early College with 13 points each. H. G. went 3 of 15 from the field and 7 of 12 at the line. T. B. added 10 points.
With the win, Head-Royce is 21-4 and has won four straight games.
