OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce scored the first 16 points and controlled the boards the rest of the way in a 47-25 win over Sonoma Academy on Wednesday, Feb. 26, improving to 19-4. The Jayhawks outrebounded the visitors 50-17 and turned 22 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points. Sonoma Academy had no second-chance points.

Morgan R. started the opening run with a putback. Leila H. followed with a basket on an assist from Morgan R., and Elena K. hit a 3-pointer and then a two to make it 9-0. Kalia K. scored inside, Leila H. made a 3-pointer set up by Elena K., and Morgan R. added another second-chance basket for a 16-0 lead. A. T. got Sonoma Academy on the board, but Head-Royce answered each basket and took a 24-10 lead into halftime.

Morgan R. took over after the break. She opened the second half with a second-chance 3-pointer, a basket off a turnover and another putback, a 7-0 run that pushed the lead to 31-10. A. T. made back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 31-16, but the Jayhawks responded with 14 straight points. Morgan R. scored on a putback, Melina M. made a free throw and Ella S. converted an offensive rebound. Morgan R. then hit consecutive 3-pointers, the first assisted by Leila H. and the second by Elena K. Abigail K. finished a pass from Morgan R., and Ella S. added a free throw to make it 45-16. After two free throws by A. T., a basket by Abigail K. gave Head-Royce its largest lead at 47-18. Sonoma Academy closed the game with a 7-0 run.

Morgan R. finished with 24 points and 18 rebounds on 10-of-13 shooting, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range. The senior grabbed seven offensive rebounds and added three assists, two steals and a block, and she scored 15 of her points in the second half. Elena K. posted 5 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Leila H. added 5 points and two assists, Melina M. had four steals and five rebounds, and Abigail K. scored 4 points.

The bench added 7 points. Kalia K. made both of her shots for 4 points, and Ella S. had 3 points and seven rebounds, six of them offensive.

Head-Royce shot 36.5 percent (19 of 52) and held Sonoma Academy to 20.9 percent (9 of 43), including 3 of 22 from 3-point range. The Jayhawks also forced 15 turnovers and blocked four shots. A. T. led Sonoma Academy with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting, and E. S. added 4 points and four steals.

Head-Royce (19-4) has won two straight and visits Encinal on Saturday, March 1.
