OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce scored 23 straight points early and held College Prep to three field goals all game in a 44-14 win on Wednesday, Feb. 12, improving to 17-3. The Jayhawks forced 32 turnovers and held the visitors to 3-of-38 shooting (7.9 percent). The win completed a season sweep of College Prep after a 53-33 road victory on Feb. 4.
Morgan R. opened the scoring with a second-chance 3-pointer, assisted by Leila H., and College Prep answered with a basket to make it 3-2. The visitors never got closer. Head-Royce scored the next 23 points, and Kalia K. did most of the damage with 12 points in the first quarter, two of them off a turnover. Leila H. added a basket and a 3-pointer during the run, and Ella S. made two free throws. The Jayhawks led 24-2 after one quarter. That was also the halftime score, as neither team scored in the second quarter.
Morgan R. finished the 23-0 run in the third quarter, scoring on a pass from Leila H. for a 26-2 lead. College Prep scored six of the next eight points, four of them on free throws, to cut the lead to 28-8. Head-Royce answered with a 9-0 run. Morgan R. made two free throws, Kalia K. scored twice on assists from Morgan R., the second off a turnover, and Morgan R. ended the run with a second-chance basket for a 37-8 lead. Abigail K. added a second-chance basket and Kara W. made a free throw to make it 41-10, the Jayhawks' largest lead at 31 points. Abigail K. closed the scoring with two free throws, and the score stayed 44-14 through a scoreless fourth quarter.
Kalia K. led Head-Royce off the bench with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting, 12 rebounds (nine offensive) and six steals. Morgan R. added 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block, and all four of her assists set up baskets by Kalia K. Leila H. had five points, four assists and two steals. Ella S. grabbed nine rebounds, six of them offensive, and Melina M. had three steals and five rebounds. Abigail K. added four points and five rebounds off the bench.
Head-Royce shot just 23.5 percent (16-of-68) and committed 29 turnovers, but its defense and rebounding more than made up for it. The Jayhawks had 20 steals and outrebounded College Prep 56-32, including 35 offensive rebounds. Those offensive rebounds led to 15 second-chance points, while College Prep had none. College Prep went 0-for-15 from 3-point range and scored eight of its 14 points at the free-throw line, and no College Prep player scored more than six points. The Head-Royce bench outscored College Prep by itself, 23-14.
Head-Royce has won three games in a row and is 17-3. The Jayhawks play next at Encinal on Saturday, March 1.
