OAKLAND, Calif. St. Joseph Notre Dame forced 38 turnovers and scored 39 points off them in a 92-58 win over the Head-Royce boys junior varsity on Friday. The Jayhawks fell to 1-4, their fourth straight loss.
The game started close. St. Joseph Notre Dame scored the first four points before Kian scored on an assist from Jackson. Owen and Jackson then scored on back-to-back trips to tie it at 6-6, the only tie of the game. Kian's 3-pointer, set up by Lil O, gave Head-Royce its first lead at 9-8. After the visitors went back in front, Lil O scored on a pass from Jackson to put the Jayhawks up 11-10. Neither of the two Head-Royce leads was bigger than one point.
A St. Joseph Notre Dame 3-pointer put the visitors ahead 13-11, and they never trailed again. Adagio's 3-pointer cut the gap to 17-14, but St. Joseph Notre Dame then scored 14 straight points to lead 31-14. That run included two baskets off turnovers, three free throws and a second-chance basket. Jackson ended it with three straight free throws, and the Jayhawks kept pace for a while. Lil O hit a 3-pointer, Jackson made four free throws in a row, and Lil O hit another 3-pointer to make it 40-31.
The visitors pulled away from there. Jackson's 3-pointer made it 44-34, but St. Joseph Notre Dame scored the next nine points, seven of them off turnovers, to lead 53-34. An 8-0 run pushed the lead to 65-39. A 13-0 run with three 3-pointers then turned a 67-44 game into an 80-44 lead. The biggest lead was 39 points, at 84-45. Head-Royce finished strong, outscoring the visitors 13-8 the rest of the way. Jackson hit two 3-pointers, Makaio made one on a pass from Jackson, and Owen added a basket.
Jackson led Head-Royce with 26 points. He shot 7 of 12 from the field, 4 of 7 from 3-point range and 8 of 10 at the line, and he added 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He scored 17 of the team's last 27 points. Owen had 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Adagio also scored 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting, made both of his 3-point tries and grabbed 7 rebounds. Lil O added 8 points with two 3-pointers and two steals, and Kian had 5 points. Makaio's 3-pointer gave the bench its 3 points.
Head-Royce shot well when it got a shot up: 19 of 39 from the field (48.7 percent) and 10 of 21 from 3-point range. But St. Joseph Notre Dame had 26 steals and took 85 shots, more than twice as many as the Jayhawks. The visitors shot 45.9 percent and won the rebounding battle 39-29. They had 23 offensive rebounds, which led to a 10-2 edge in second-chance points. Head-Royce forced 15 turnovers but scored no points off them.
Head-Royce is now 1-4 on the 2024-25 season.
