OAKLAND, Calif. The Head-Royce boys junior varsity team committed 23 turnovers Saturday and lost 37-29 to King's Academy JV at home. The Jayhawks dropped to 1-1 on the season. King's Academy scored 12 points off those turnovers and added six second-chance points on 10 offensive rebounds, which kept Head-Royce from ever tying the game or taking the lead.
King's Academy opened with a 3-pointer and built a 7-2 lead. Kian made two free throws and Owen added another to cut the gap to 7-5. After King's Academy scored again, Kian hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Makaio to make it 9-8. The visitors answered with a 7-0 run, three straight field goals and a free throw, to go up 16-8.
Adagio then scored all six points in a 6-0 Head-Royce run. He scored inside, made a free throw and hit a 3-pointer off a turnover, assisted by Kian, to make it 16-14. King's Academy scored again before Kian finished a pass from Adagio, and Head-Royce trailed 18-16 at halftime.
King's Academy opened the second half with a second-chance basket, and Adagio answered with another 3-pointer off a turnover, this one assisted by Cam, to pull the Jayhawks within 20-19. The visitors then went on a second 7-0 run, a 3-pointer and two baskets off turnovers, to lead 27-19. Kian's 3-pointer off a turnover, assisted by Owen, made it 27-22. King's Academy followed with six straight points, a second-chance basket and two more scores off turnovers, and led 33-22, its largest lead of the game. Cam hit a 3-pointer and Adagio scored off a turnover to cut the deficit to 33-27. King's Academy scored the next two baskets, and Owen closed the scoring with a basket on an assist from Adagio.
Adagio led Head-Royce with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range and 1-of-1 at the line. He added three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Kian scored 10 points off the bench on 3-of-7 shooting, with two 3-pointers, 2-of-2 free throws, two assists and two blocks. Owen had a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks to go with three points and an assist. Cam scored three points, and Clayton had two steals.
Head-Royce shot 37 percent (10 of 27), went 5-of-16 from 3-point range and made 4 of 7 free throws. King's Academy shot 48.6 percent (17 of 35), but only 2 of 9 from beyond the arc and 1 of 5 at the line. The teams each finished with 16 rebounds, but King's Academy had 10 offensive boards to two for Head-Royce and outscored the Jayhawks 6-0 on second-chance points. Head-Royce forced 13 turnovers and scored 11 points off them, had seven steals and blocked six shots, while King's Academy had no blocks. Bench scoring favored the Jayhawks 10-0.
The loss ended Head-Royce's unbeaten start, and the Jayhawks are now 1-1 on the season.
