OAKLAND, Calif. Morgan R. scored 14 of Head-Royce's 17 points, including all seven in the run that decided the game, as the Jayhawks held off College Prep 17-14 on Thursday, Jan. 9. The win lifted Head-Royce to 10-2 and extended its winning streak to seven games.

Head-Royce scored the first five points. Morgan R. opened the scoring with a free throw and added a second-chance basket, and Abigail K. followed with a basket off a turnover on a feed from Emmy M. for a 5-0 lead. After College Prep got on the board, Morgan R. scored on another assist from Emmy M. to make it 7-2.

College Prep then scored six straight points and took an 8-7 lead, its only lead of the game. Head-Royce went back in front right away when Emmy M. found Morgan R. for a basket and a 9-8 lead. A College Prep free throw tied the game at 9, the only tie of the night.

The Jayhawks decided the game from there. Morgan R. scored the next seven points, starting with a basket and adding two more baskets off College Prep turnovers before making a free throw. The 7-0 run put Head-Royce ahead 16-9, its biggest lead of the game.

College Prep cut the lead to 16-12 with a free throw and a second-chance basket. Geneva W. L. made a free throw to push the lead back to 17-12, and College Prep scored the final basket to make it 17-14.

Morgan R. finished with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 shooting at the line. The senior also had four rebounds, two of them offensive, and two steals, and she did not commit a turnover. Emmy M. had three assists, which accounted for every Head-Royce assist in the game. Abigail K. scored two points and had a steal. Off the bench, Geneva W. L. had one point, two steals and the team's only blocked shot.

The Jayhawks' defense made the difference. Head-Royce forced seven turnovers, six of them on steals, and turned them into six points, while College Prep scored no points off Head-Royce's five turnovers. College Prep shot 50 percent from the field (6 of 12), better than Head-Royce's 41.2 percent (7 of 17), but made only 2 of 10 free throws. Head-Royce also won the rebounding battle 9-7, though each team had two second-chance points. College Prep's No. 24 led the visitors with six points on 3-of-3 shooting.

Head-Royce, now 10-2, goes on the road to face St. Joseph Notre Dame on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
