OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce never trailed and got a perfect shooting night from Morgan R. as the Jayhawks beat College Prep 12-8 on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, stretching their winning streak to six games and improving to 9-2. The difference came at the free throw line. Head-Royce made 4 of 7 attempts, while College Prep went 0 for 4 in a game where both teams shot 4 of 10 from the field.
Head-Royce took control from the start with a 6-0 run. Morgan R. opened the scoring with a basket off a College Prep turnover, Abigail K. followed with a field goal and Morgan R. scored again to make it 6-0.
College Prep got on the board to cut the deficit to 6-2, but the Jayhawks answered with four straight points. Morgan R. converted a second-chance basket and added a free throw for a 9-2 lead. Geneva W. L. then made a free throw to push the margin to 10-2, the largest lead of the game at eight points.
College Prep responded with back-to-back baskets, the second on an assisted play, to pull within 10-6. Head-Royce steadied itself at the line, where Elena K. and Geneva W. L. each made a free throw for a 12-6 edge. College Prep scored the last basket to cut the margin to 12-8, but the Jayhawks held on in a game with no lead changes and no ties.
Morgan R. led all scorers with 7 points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field and 1-of-1 shooting from the free throw line, accounting for more than half of the Head-Royce total. The senior also grabbed 2 rebounds, one on the offensive glass, and had a steal. Abigail K. added 2 points on 1-of-1 shooting, and Geneva W. L., a freshman, scored 2 points by making 2 of 4 free throws. Elena K. contributed a point and a steal, and Kalia K. finished with a rebound and a steal.
With the field goal numbers even, the Jayhawks won in the other categories. Head-Royce forced six turnovers while committing five, collected three steals and held a 2-0 edge in both points off turnovers and second-chance points. College Prep outrebounded Head-Royce 7-4 and was led by No. 5, who scored 4 points on 2-of-2 shooting.
Head-Royce (9-2) returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 14, when it visits St. Joseph Notre Dame.
