OAKLAND, Calif. Morgan R. scored Head-Royce's first 13 points and finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Jayhawks built a 27-point lead and beat Convent 49-36 in girls varsity basketball on Thursday. Head-Royce improved to 4-2 and never trailed or was tied.

Head-Royce opened the game with a 19-0 run. Morgan R. scored the first basket on an assist from Leila H., then added two second-chance baskets, a basket off a turnover and a second-chance 3-pointer set up by Elena K. Kalia K., Abigail K. and Leila H. each scored to finish the run. Convent answered with six straight points from Siena and Kiera, but the Jayhawks led 23-8 after the first quarter.

Morgan R. kept the lead growing in the second quarter with a 3-pointer and another basket for a 32-14 edge. Abigail K. scored twice on passes from Leila H. to make it 36-16, and after two Siena free throws, Leila H. hit a second-chance 3-pointer, assisted by Emmy M., for a 39-18 halftime lead.

The Jayhawks scored the first six points of the third quarter. Leila H. scored twice on assists from Morgan R., and Morgan R. added a basket off a turnover to finish a 9-0 run and make it 45-18. Kara W. scored on a feed from Abigail K. for a 47-20 lead. Convent then scored 16 of the game's last 18 points. A 7-0 run cut the lead to 47-27, and Vera W. scored on an assist from Emmy M. for Head-Royce's last points. Convent closed with a 9-0 run that included a second-chance 3-pointer from Elsie. Head-Royce did not score in the fourth quarter, but Convent scored only one point in the period, a free throw.

Morgan R. made 10 of 15 shots, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, and added five offensive rebounds, four steals and three assists for a double-double. Leila H. had 11 points, a team-high six assists and three steals without a turnover. Abigail K. scored six points on 3-of-4 shooting, and Kalia K. had six points and seven rebounds off the bench. Elena K. added three steals and a block.

Head-Royce forced 18 turnovers, 12 of them on steals, and outrebounded Convent 42-32, including 16 offensive rebounds that led to 12 second-chance points. The Jayhawks shot 35.9 percent to Convent's 31.9 percent and had 13 assists to Convent's four. The bench scored 10 points. Siena led Convent with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Elsie added 10 points.
