OAKLAND, Calif. Morgan R. scored 30 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, and the Head-Royce girls basketball team opened with a 16-0 run on its way to a 48-25 win over Skyline in its season opener Thursday. The Jayhawks improved to 1-0 by controlling the glass, finishing with a 49-21 rebounding edge.

Head-Royce never trailed. Leila H. scored the first two baskets of the game, and Morgan R. followed with 12 straight points, capped by a pair of free throws, to make it 16-0. After Skyline got on the board, the Jayhawks answered with an 8-0 run to go up 24-2. Morgan R. scored six of those points, four of them on second-chance baskets. Late in the half, Abigail K. and freshman Missgana B. each scored off assists from Morgan R., and Head-Royce led 30-7 at halftime. Morgan R. had 20 points by the break.

Skyline scored 18 points in the second half, but it never got closer than 20. Elena K. hit a 3-pointer on a feed from Leila H. to push the lead to 35-11. When Skyline scored the next four points, Head-Royce went on a 6-0 run, with Morgan R. scoring on two straight putbacks and Elena K. adding a basket to make it 41-15. Elena K. hit her second 3-pointer, assisted by Emmy M., for a 44-17 lead, and a basket by Morgan R. made it 46-19, the Jayhawks' largest lead at 27. Skyline closed with a 6-0 run before Morgan R. scored off a turnover on an assist from Leila H. for the final points.

Morgan R. made 14 of her 20 shots and added three steals, two assists and a block. She had eight offensive rebounds and scored all 14 of Head-Royce's second-chance points on seven putbacks. Junior Ella S. pulled down 14 rebounds, seven on the offensive end. Elena K. finished with eight points, two 3-pointers and five rebounds, and Leila H. had six points and a team-high three assists.

Head-Royce grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, and Skyline had 10. The Jayhawks shot 22 of 52 (42 percent) from the field. Their defense held Skyline to 12 of 56 (21 percent) shooting and 1 of 19 from 3-point range. Head-Royce did commit 21 turnovers, 12 of them on Skyline steals, and forced 10 turnovers of its own. Skyline's No. 22 led the visitors with 12 points and five steals. Abigail K. and Missgana B. each had two points off the bench.
