OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce beat College Prep 48-22 on Tuesday, Jan. 30, to improve to 8-4 and win its second straight game. The Jayhawks controlled the glass, finishing with a 47-19 rebounding edge and 26 offensive boards, and never trailed.
Head-Royce opened with a 7-0 run. Ella S. scored on a putback, Tara P. added two baskets and Hailey H. made a free throw for a 7-0 lead. College Prep answered with a 3-pointer and two field goals to pull within 9-7, but Morgan R. scored the next eight points herself, two of them on putbacks, to push the lead to 17-7. Abigail K. scored off the bench, and the Jayhawks led 19-9 after one quarter.
The second quarter decided the game. Leila H. opened it with a basket, and College Prep trailed 22-13 before Head-Royce went on a 12-0 run. Morgan R. scored eight points in that stretch, and Hailey H. and Leila H. each added a basket to make it 34-13. Morgan R. scored again after a College Prep field goal, sending the Jayhawks into halftime ahead 36-15. Morgan R. had 18 of her team's 36 first-half points.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. Elena K. and Morgan R. opened the fourth with baskets to finish a 6-0 run and make it 40-15. From there Head-Royce closed out the win at the free-throw line, with Kaley C. going 2-for-2 and Hailey H. making four free throws in the quarter. Ella S. scored the game's final points on a putback.
Morgan R. led all scorers and posted a double-double with 20 points on 9-of-21 shooting, 14 rebounds (nine offensive), five blocks, three assists and a steal. Hailey H. added seven points, going 5-of-11 at the line, and grabbed eight rebounds. Ella S. also scored seven points on 3-of-5 shooting to go with eight rebounds, seven of them offensive, and four steals. Leila H. led the team with five assists and five steals and added four points and four rebounds. Tara P. scored four points with two steals and a block, and sophomore Emmy M. had five rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Head-Royce shot 30.2 percent (19-of-63) from the field and did not make a 3-pointer in 14 attempts, but its work on the boards made up the difference. The Jayhawks outscored College Prep 12-4 in second-chance points, recorded 18 steals and blocked six shots. College Prep shot 28.6 percent (10-of-35) and went 0-of-4 at the line. Three College Prep players scored six points apiece. Head-Royce got six points from its bench.
Head-Royce is now 8-4 on the season.
