Head-Royce scored 34 points in the first quarter and never trailed as the Jayhawks beat College Prep 48-26 on the road Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024. Head-Royce (10-4) won its fourth straight game, one week after beating College Prep 48-22 at home on Jan. 30.
The Jayhawks scored the game's first six points on baskets by Leila H., Hailey H. and Morgan R. College Prep answered with a 3-pointer, but Leila H. hit a 3-pointer and a free throw to make it 10-4. Head-Royce then scored 14 straight points. Ella S. started the run with a second-chance basket, Leila H. added a 3-pointer and a putback, Morgan R. scored five points, and Elena K. finished it with a basket for a 24-4 lead. Ella S. and Hailey H. added baskets, Morgan R. scored three more times, twice off turnovers, and Head-Royce led 34-9 after one quarter.
Morgan R. opened the second quarter with a basket, and Elena K. and Hailey H. followed with baskets to make it 40-9. Abigail K. made two free throws and a basket for a 44-11 lead, the Jayhawks' largest of the game at 33 points. College Prep closed the half with a 7-0 run and trailed 44-18 at halftime. Neither team scored in the third quarter. Morgan R. scored the first basket of the fourth quarter for a 46-18 lead. College Prep answered with an 8-0 run, and Hailey H. scored the final basket of the game off a turnover.
Morgan R. led Head-Royce with 17 points and 14 rebounds, six of them offensive, and added six steals, two blocks and two assists. She scored 15 of her points in the first half. Leila H. scored all 11 of her points in the first quarter, made two of her six 3-point attempts and finished with a team-high seven steals and three assists. Hailey H. had eight points and five rebounds, and Ella S. added four points, eight rebounds and five steals. Elena K. and Abigail K. scored four points each, and Abigail K. made both of her free throws.
Head-Royce's defense set the tone. The Jayhawks had 26 steals and scored 10 points off turnovers. They shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63) from the field and held College Prep to 27.8 percent (10-of-36), including 1-of-11 from 3-point range. Head-Royce won the rebounding battle 42-20, grabbed 22 offensive rebounds and outscored College Prep 10-2 on second-chance points. The Jayhawks also committed 26 turnovers, which College Prep turned into eight points.
College Prep's No. 13 led her team with 10 points and six rebounds, and No. 11 added nine points.
With the win, Head-Royce improved to 10-4 and has won four games in a row.
