OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce scored the first 33 points of the game and never looked back, beating Athenian 63-17 on Tuesday night to improve to 6-3 on the season. Morgan R. scored 16 of her 27 points during the opening run as the Jayhawks built a lead that reached 46 points.
Hailey H. scored the first basket of the game, and Head-Royce kept scoring from there. Morgan R. added two second-chance baskets and a pair of 3-pointers during the run, Leila H. hit a 3-pointer, and Elena K., Ella S., Maya P. and Abigail K. all scored before Hailey H. finished a second-chance basket to make it 33-0. Athenian scored off a turnover for its first points, but Head-Royce led 38-7 after the first quarter.
The Jayhawks answered two straight Athenian baskets early in the second quarter with a 9-0 run. Morgan R. scored off a turnover and hit a 3-pointer, and Leila H. added two baskets to push the lead to 47-9. Athenian scored the next four points, but Maya P. scored off a turnover to send Head-Royce into halftime ahead 49-13. Neither team scored in the third quarter. Head-Royce opened the fourth with 10 straight points from Emmy M., Morgan R., Leila H., Abigail K. and Tara P., which finished a 12-0 run and made it 59-13. Morgan R. closed the scoring with two baskets in the final minutes.
Morgan R. posted a double-double, making 12 of 13 shots from the field, including all three of her 3-point attempts. She added 10 rebounds (six offensive), six assists, five steals and three blocks. Leila H. added 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting to go with four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Ella S. scored five points and had three steals, and Hailey H. added four points and four rebounds.
Head-Royce shot 53 percent (29 of 55) from the field and 4 of 8 from 3-point range, while holding Athenian to 29 percent (7 of 24). The Jayhawks had 15 steals and outscored Athenian 14-6 in points off turnovers. They also outrebounded Athenian 28-13, and their 14 offensive rebounds led to 14 second-chance points. No Athenian player scored more than five points.
The Head-Royce bench added 12 points. Maya P. and Abigail K. scored four points each, and sophomore Emmy M. went 1 for 1 from the field with two rebounds and two assists. Tara P. added two points.
The Jayhawks (6-3) have won two straight. Head-Royce visits Valley Christian on Friday, Jan. 26.
