OAKLAND, Calif. The Head-Royce Boys JV team led from the opening basket to the final horn and beat College Prep JV 70-29 on Friday, Dec. 1. The Jayhawks improved to 6-3 and won their second straight game, and their defense set the tone with 19 steals.
Head-Royce scored the first seven points. LaMarr Covington opened with two baskets and a free throw, and Jack Peay added a basket for a 7-0 lead. College Prep JV scored twice to get within 9-4, but the Jayhawks answered with a 10-0 run. Peay and Nick Taubes each scored, Jonah Greenberg turned two straight turnovers into baskets and Covington finished the run to make it 19-4.
The Jayhawks put together another 10-0 run to turn a 25-7 lead into 35-7. Taubes started it with a basket off a turnover, Peay scored three straight baskets and Covington added another. College Prep JV had its best stretch after that, scoring seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to 37-14. Head-Royce answered with a 14-0 run that put the game away. Taubes scored six points in the run on a free throw, a two and a 3-pointer off a turnover. Ezra Goldfarb scored off a turnover, Peay made a free throw, Luke Silva hit a second-chance 3-pointer and Greenberg scored on an assist from Max Roston-Saul to make it 51-14.
The visitors never got closer than 35 points the rest of the way. Jackson Benson hit a 3-pointer, Silva scored twice and Davis Lynch added a free throw, a basket and a 3-pointer off a turnover. Taubes then scored on back-to-back possessions to make it 68-26, Head-Royce's largest lead at 42 points. Peay closed the scoring with two free throws.
Taubes, a freshman, led Head-Royce with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added three steals and two assists. Peay, also a freshman, scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, three of them offensive. Covington finished with 11 points and three steals. Greenberg, a junior, recorded a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds and also blocked two shots. Goldfarb had a team-high four assists to go with six rebounds and two steals. Silva added seven points and Lynch scored six.
Head-Royce shot 30 of 69 (43.5 percent) from the field and turned the ball over just seven times. Its 19 steals led to 16 points off turnovers, and nine different players recorded at least one steal. The Jayhawks outrebounded College Prep JV 35-16, including 13 offensive rebounds. College Prep JV shot 11 of 35 (31.4 percent) and did not record an assist. Indrias scored two points for the visitors, both on free throws.
