OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce turned 17 steals and a 23-8 rebounding advantage into a 76-33 win over Redwood Christian JV on Thursday, improving the Jayhawks' record to 11-5 and stretching their winning streak to five games.
Head-Royce scored the game's first 12 points on five field goals and two free throws before Redwood Christian JV scored. The visitors answered with a 15-0 run of their own. They hit three straight 3-pointers, then added three consecutive baskets, one of them off a Head-Royce turnover, to take a 15-12 lead. That was their largest lead of the night.
The Jayhawks responded right away. Five straight field goals made up a 10-0 run that put Head-Royce back in front at 22-15. After a Redwood Christian JV free throw, the Jayhawks went on another 10-0 run, this one built on two free throws and four consecutive baskets off turnovers, to lead 32-16. The game had only two lead changes and no ties, and Redwood Christian JV never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Head-Royce kept adding to the lead. After Redwood Christian JV made it 52-30, the Jayhawks scored nine straight points, starting with their only 3-pointer of the game, to go up 61-30. A second-chance basket started another 9-0 run that made it 70-32. Head-Royce closed the game with the last six points, and the final score of 76-33 was also its largest lead.
The scorer tracked both teams as team totals only, so individual statistics were not available. As a group, Head-Royce made 35 of 63 shots from the field (55.6 percent) and had 19 assists on those 35 baskets. The Jayhawks also made 5 of 6 free throws, blocked two shots and scored 16 points off turnovers.
Redwood Christian JV shot well when it got shots up, making 12 of 21 from the field (57.1 percent) and 6 of 8 from 3-point range. Shot volume decided the game. Head-Royce took 42 more field goal attempts than the visitors, outrebounded them 23-8 (including five offensive rebounds) and had 10 turnovers. The Jayhawks made just 1 of 16 attempts from beyond the arc, but they made 34 of 47 two-point attempts.
