OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce never trailed on Tuesday, Jan. 23, and a 17-0 run turned a comfortable lead into a rout as the Jayhawks beat Athenian JV 73-41. The win moved Head-Royce to 10-5 and stretched its winning streak to four games.
The Jayhawks opened with a 10-0 run. Nick Taubes and Ezra Goldfarb hit back-to-back 3-pointers, and baskets by LaMarr Covington and Davis Lynch followed. Covington's 3-pointer made it 19-8, and Max Roston-Saul's 3-pointer off a Taubes assist pushed the lead to 22-11. Athenian JV answered with an 8-0 run, four points of it at the free-throw line, and pulled within 22-19.
Covington answered with three straight baskets, and Jackson Benson added another to complete an 8-0 run that made it 30-19. Taubes then hit a 3-pointer off a turnover, and Jonah Greenberg took over inside. He scored Head-Royce's next seven field goals, two of them on second chances, and turned a 33-22 lead into a 47-26 lead. His last three baskets started the 17-0 run. Roston-Saul hit a 3-pointer, Lynch and Jack Peay scored off turnovers, and Luke Silva finished the run with a second-chance 3-pointer, assisted by Peay, for a 58-26 lead.
Head-Royce kept scoring after that. Lawrence Liu, Goldfarb and Roston-Saul (twice) all scored, and a Lynch 3-pointer made it 69-32, the largest lead of the night at 37 points. Greenberg added one more basket and Owen Curry made two free throws before Athenian JV hit a 3-pointer to end the game.
Greenberg finished with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 10 rebounds, eight of them offensive, plus two steals. Covington scored 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting, all before Head-Royce reached 30. Roston-Saul added 10 points with two 3-pointers and two steals. Goldfarb ran the offense with six assists and added seven points, five rebounds and three steals. Lynch had seven points, six rebounds and three steals, Curry grabbed nine rebounds (six offensive) and blocked two shots, and Peay pulled down eight rebounds.
Head-Royce had 17 steals and outscored Athenian JV 14-2 in points off turnovers. The Jayhawks also outrebounded Athenian JV 44-28, with 20 offensive rebounds, and won the second-chance scoring 7-2. Head-Royce shot 31 of 75 (41.3 percent) and made 9 of 26 from 3-point range, with 15 assists and eight turnovers. Athenian JV shot 46.9 percent and made 5 of 9 from 3-point range, but it took only 32 shots. Eleven Jayhawks scored.
The win completed a season sweep of Athenian JV, which Head-Royce beat 92-58 at home on Jan. 12. Head-Royce (10-5) hosts Redwood Christian JV on Thursday, Feb. 1.
