OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce never trailed and used an 18-0 run to pull away from Bentley for a 75-36 boys basketball victory Tuesday, improving to 10-1 on the 2022-23 season. Christian led the Jayhawks with 23 points, and Head-Royce controlled the glass with 25 offensive rebounds, which it turned into 18 second-chance points.
Christian opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and after a Bentley free throw, the Jayhawks went on a 7-0 run to lead 10-1. Topher scored all five of his points in that stretch, finishing a feed from Osagie, scoring off a turnover on an assist from Josh and adding a free throw before Christian scored on an assist from Malcolm. Bentley hit a 3-pointer to make it 10-4, but Head-Royce answered with nine straight points. Christian hit another 3-pointer, Gus scored on a second chance, Josh converted off a turnover and Marcus finished a pass from Malcolm for a 19-4 lead.
After a Bentley basket made it 19-6, the Jayhawks broke the game open with an 18-0 run to 37-6. Marcus started it on an assist from Gus, Johnny added a free throw and Micah scored twice, once off a turnover and once on a second chance. Christian had seven points in the run, including a second-chance 3-pointer on an assist from Andre, while Uche Okereke and Andre each scored off turnovers.
Bentley never got within 28 points again. Head-Royce added a 9-0 run from 42-13 to 51-13, as Okereke scored on a second chance, Andre hit a second-chance 3-pointer and Bryce made a 3-pointer and a free throw. Marcus took over late, scoring 10 points on five baskets between 60-21 and 68-31, two of them on second chances. Gus hit a 3-pointer for the Jayhawks' final points and a 75-34 lead, their largest of the night at 41.
Christian finished 9-of-18 from the field and 5-of-14 from 3-point range, adding six rebounds and two assists. Marcus scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and grabbed four offensive rebounds. Andre added eight points with two 3-pointers and three assists. Okereke had six points, a team-high eight rebounds (six offensive) and four steals. Gus scored five points and led the team with six assists to go with five rebounds and three steals, while Topher and Micah each scored five points.
Head-Royce shot 31-of-64 (48 percent) from the field and held Bentley to 13-of-33 (39 percent). The Jayhawks outrebounded Bentley 39-16, including a 25-6 edge on the offensive glass, and won the second-chance scoring battle 18-0. Head-Royce assisted on 22 of its 31 field goals, and its 15 steals led to 14 points off turnovers. Ten Jayhawks scored.
