Head-Royce built a 15-point lead in the first half but could not hold it Saturday, falling 52-45 at Urban. Urban went 15 of 18 at the free throw line and held the Jayhawks to 31 percent shooting from the field. The loss dropped Head-Royce to 13-2.
Urban scored first on a basket off a turnover, but Marcel tied the game at 2-2 with two free throws, and Head-Royce ran off 10 straight points. Andre hit a second-chance three set up by Johnny, Marcel scored off a turnover on a feed from Uche Okereke, and Andre added another three on an assist from Micah for a 10-2 lead. After an Urban basket, the Jayhawks scored eight in a row. Johnny hit a three from Andre, Okereke made a free throw, Andre scored off a turnover and Marcel made two more free throws for an 18-4 lead. Andre's three off a turnover made it 21-6, the biggest lead of the night for Head-Royce.
Urban answered with a 13-0 run, and four of its baskets in that stretch came off Head-Royce turnovers. That cut the lead to 21-19. Jaden ended the run with a free throw, and after Urban scored to make it 22-21, Marcel scored the next two baskets, the second off a turnover, to send Head-Royce into halftime ahead 26-21.
Urban opened the second half with a three, but Micah scored, Okereke made a free throw and Andre scored on a pass from Micah for a 31-24 lead. Urban then scored 10 straight. It tied the game at 31 on a free throw, went ahead 32-31 on another and extended the lead to 34-31. Andre tied it at 34 with a three off an assist from Bryce, but Urban scored the next five points. Johnny and Marcel each scored, but Urban answered with a three for a 44-38 lead. Christian scored on a feed from Micah, and Johnny scored off a turnover on another Micah assist to pull Head-Royce within 44-42. Urban then scored the next eight points, a basket off a turnover followed by six straight free throws, to go up 52-42, its largest lead. Christian closed the scoring with a three from Johnny.
Andre led Head-Royce with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range, and added two steals. Marcel had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, six of them offensive, and went 4 of 4 at the line. Johnny scored seven points with three assists and two steals, and Micah had four assists. Okereke grabbed six rebounds, five on the offensive glass. Christian finished with five points.
Head-Royce shot 16 of 52 (31 percent) from the field and 6 of 19 from 3-point range, while Urban shot 45 percent. The Jayhawks outrebounded Urban 24-20 and had 13 offensive rebounds, but those produced only five second-chance points. Head-Royce committed 18 turnovers, which Urban turned into 14 points. Head-Royce forced 11 turnovers and scored 11 points off them. The Jayhawks' bench did not score, and Urban's top scorer finished with 31 points and 12 rebounds.
