OAKLAND, Calif. Micah scored 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting, and Head-Royce made 19 of 24 free throws to pull away from Enterprise for a 58-46 boys basketball win Tuesday. The victory moved the Jayhawks to 14-2 on the season.
The game opened fast. Micah scored the first basket, and Johnny hit a 3-pointer on a Micah assist to put Head-Royce up 7-3. Baskets by Andre and Micah pushed the lead to 11-5, but Enterprise answered with an 11-0 run to go ahead 16-11, its biggest lead of the night. Bryce stopped the run with two free throws, and after an Enterprise free throw made it 17-13, the Jayhawks scored nine straight points. Micah hit two baskets, the second off a turnover, to tie the game at 17. Marcel followed with a second-chance basket and a free throw, and Bryce scored to make it 22-17. Bryce went 4-for-4 at the line the rest of the period, and Osagie scored on a Micah assist to give Head-Royce a 30-22 lead after one quarter.
Micah opened the second quarter with two baskets that completed a 6-0 run and made it 34-22. Enterprise scored the next six points to get within 34-28, but Johnny and Uche Okereke answered, and Micah hit a 3-pointer for a 40-30 lead. Enterprise hit a 3-pointer off a turnover before the break, and Head-Royce led 40-33 at halftime.
Enterprise made its strongest push in the third quarter. After a Micah basket made it 42-33, Enterprise scored a 3-pointer and a two, both off turnovers, to cut the gap to 44-42. Johnny responded with a free throw and a 3-pointer for a 48-42 lead. After an Enterprise free throw, Head-Royce scored eight straight points, all at the foul line. Micah made four free throws, and Johnny and Okereke each made two, putting the Jayhawks up 56-43, their biggest lead of the game. Enterprise hit a 3-pointer to end the third quarter trailing 56-46, then went scoreless in the fourth. Micah's basket was the only score of the final quarter.
Micah led Head-Royce with 25 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Johnny added 11 points and made both of his 3-point attempts. Bryce scored 10 points and made all six of his free throws. Marcel had five points and a team-high five rebounds, and Okereke added three points. Andre blocked three shots.
The foul line decided the game. Both teams made 18 field goals, and Enterprise shot 69.2 percent from the floor (18 of 26) while Head-Royce shot 48.6 percent (18 of 37). Enterprise also made two more 3-pointers (5 of 8 to 3 of 9). The Jayhawks made up the difference at the line, where they made 14 more free throws than Enterprise, which went 5 of 13. Enterprise was called for 14 fouls to Head-Royce's eight. Head-Royce forced 12 turnovers and blocked five shots, while Enterprise held an 18-16 edge on the boards.
Head-Royce is now 14-2 on the season.
