OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce scored the first 18 points of the game and never trailed on Tuesday, beating Redwood Christian 82-37 to stay unbeaten at 9-0. The Jayhawks scored 66 points in the first half, shot 58 percent from the field and assisted on 29 of their 34 field goals.
Head-Royce made its first eight shots of the game. Topher started the run with a basket off a feed from Christian, Gus added a two and a 3-pointer, and Christian hit a 3-pointer off a turnover before Topher scored on a putback to make it 18-0. Redwood Christian got its first points at the free throw line, but Christian answered with 8 points in a 12-0 run, including back-to-back 3-pointers. Josh finished the run with a 3-pointer off a turnover for a 34-3 lead, and the Jayhawks led 35-9 after one quarter.
Redwood Christian opened the second quarter with a second-chance 3-pointer, but Head-Royce kept adding to its lead. Topher scored inside, and Christian and Malcolm hit 3-pointers off turnovers in an 8-0 run that made it 55-22. Jaden and Christian scored off turnovers to start a second 8-0 run, and Marcus finished it with a basket off a turnover and a putback for a 63-24 lead. Marcus scored off another turnover before the break, and Head-Royce took a 66-26 lead into halftime after winning the second quarter 31-17.
Head-Royce outscored Redwood Christian 16-11 in the third quarter. Gus and Malcolm each hit a 3-pointer, and Uche Okereke scored on two straight putbacks to make it 82-34, the Jayhawks' largest lead of the game at 48. Redwood Christian made a 3-pointer for the last points of the game, and the score held at 82-37 through the fourth quarter.
Christian led Head-Royce with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range, and added four assists and two steals. Gus had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds and six assists without a turnover. Malcolm made all four of his shots, including two 3-pointers, and finished with 10 points and five assists. Marcus also scored 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting with three rebounds and a block. Topher and Andre scored 6 points each, and Uche Okereke had 4 points, two steals and a block.
Head-Royce outrebounded Redwood Christian 34-20, including 12 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second-chance points. The Jayhawks made 10 of 22 3-point attempts, had 12 steals and scored 27 points off turnovers. Redwood Christian shot 32 percent (13 of 41) and made 4 of 22 from 3-point range. Its leading scorer, whose name was not recorded, had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The win gave Head-Royce a season sweep of Redwood Christian after an 81-31 road win on Jan. 12. The Jayhawks are 9-0 and have won nine straight games.
