OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce never trailed and beat International 57-39 on Saturday, Jan. 28, to improve to 8-0 and extend its winning streak to eight games. The Jayhawks won on the glass and in ball movement. They grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, turned them into 14 second-chance points and assisted on 17 of their 23 field goals.
Micah opened the scoring with a basket off a feed from Marcel, and International answered to tie the game at 2-2, the only tie of the night. Head-Royce then ran off 10 straight points. Johnny made a free throw, Marcel scored on a putback, Micah hit a 3-pointer and added a layup off a turnover, and Johnny finished another turnover with a basket from Micah to make it 12-2.
International answered with a 6-0 run on a pair of 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 12-8. Christian and Bryce responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to 18-8. Micah's second 3-pointer made it 21-11, but International hit two more from deep to pull within 21-17. The Jayhawks never let the lead get closer. Johnny scored on two straight second-chance baskets and then scored off a turnover on an assist from Marcel, and Micah added a putback to finish an 8-0 run and make it 29-17.
International scored five straight to get within 29-22, but Osagie made two free throws, Bryce scored on a putback and Andre finished a pass from Marcel to make it 35-22. Andre later hit a 3-pointer from Bryce, and Uche Okereke scored on two putbacks as the Jayhawks moved ahead 42-27. Marcel then scored six straight Head-Royce points on two free throws and two assisted baskets to make it 50-37. After International scored to make it 50-39, the Jayhawks closed on a 7-0 run. Christian hit a 3-pointer from Andre, and Andre scored the final four points on assists from Christian and Bryce to finish the game with the 18-point lead, Head-Royce's largest of the night.
Micah led Head-Royce with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, and added three rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot. Johnny scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, pulled down three offensive rebounds and did not commit a turnover. Andre added nine points, two assists, a steal and a block. Marcel finished with eight points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Bryce ran the offense with a team-high five assists and six rebounds to go with five points and two steals. Christian made two 3-pointers for six points, and Okereke had four points and five rebounds.
Head-Royce shot 41 percent (23-of-56) from the field and 6-of-14 from 3-point range. The Jayhawks outrebounded International 32-17 and committed only six turnovers. They forced eight and turned them into 11 points, while International scored only two points off turnovers. International shot 33 percent (14-of-42) from the field and made 7 of 26 attempts from 3-point range.
With the win, Head-Royce improved to 8-0 on the 2022-23 season.
