Head-Royce took control from the opening tip and never let go, beating Redwood Christian 81-31 on Thursday, Jan. 12, to improve to 5-0. The Jayhawks built a 22-2 lead after one quarter, then scored 45 points in the second quarter to lead 67-24 at halftime.
The Jayhawks scored the first nine points of the game. Micah opened the scoring, and Andre, Marcel and Andre again followed to make it 9-0. Redwood Christian answered with a second-chance basket, but Head-Royce responded with a 17-0 run that stretched across the quarter break. Andre hit a 3-pointer and a jumper, Uche Okereke scored off a turnover, and Micah scored six straight points, including two baskets off turnovers, to make it 22-2 at the end of the first quarter. Jaden and Johnny added baskets to push the lead to 26-2.
After a Redwood Christian 3-pointer, Head-Royce opened another run, this one 16-0. Okereke scored inside, Jaden and Christian hit second-chance 3-pointers, and Johnny scored three straight baskets before Marcel finished the run at 42-5. Marcel kept it going with a basket off a turnover, a 3-pointer and a layup on an assist from Gus. Later in the quarter, Johnny scored twice in a row and Christian hit a 3-pointer for a 58-18 lead. The Jayhawks closed the half with a 9-0 run on a Bryce putback, a Johnny basket off a turnover, two Christian free throws and a Malcolm 3-pointer set up by Bryce. That made it 67-21 before Redwood Christian hit a 3-pointer off a turnover to make it 67-24 at the break.
Head-Royce outscored Redwood Christian 14-7 in the third quarter. Andre scored twice in an 8-0 spurt that also included baskets from Josh and Malcolm. Gus scored, and Jaden's second-chance basket made it 81-31, matching the Jayhawks' largest lead of 50 points. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Johnny and Andre led Head-Royce with 14 points each. Johnny made 7 of 8 shots and added five assists and five steals without a turnover. Andre went 6 of 10 from the floor, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range, with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Marcel made all five of his shots, including a 3-pointer, and finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Micah added 10 points, and Christian had eight points on two 3-pointers. Jaden scored seven points with three assists, and Okereke went 2 of 2 with five rebounds and two blocks. Marcus had a team-high seven rebounds, and 12 Jayhawks scored.
Head-Royce shot 51.4 percent (36 of 70) and held Redwood Christian to 26.8 percent (11 of 41). The Jayhawks outrebounded the Knights 43-12, including 20-4 on the offensive glass, which led to 16 second-chance points. Head-Royce also had 14 steals and scored 16 points off turnovers, and 21 of its 36 field goals came on assists. Redwood Christian's leading scorer finished with 19 points on 8 of 21 shooting, with seven rebounds and five assists.
Head-Royce is now 5-0 and has won five straight games.
