OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce came back from a 15-point deficit with an 18-0 run in the fourth quarter and beat Lick-Wilmerding 51-46 on Friday. The Jayhawks improved to 4-0 and have won four straight games.
Head-Royce started quickly. Bryce scored the first points on two free throws. After Lick-Wilmerding went ahead 4-2, Andre hit a 3-pointer on a Bryce assist and then scored off a turnover. Christian's 3-pointer, also set up by Bryce, broke a 9-9 tie. Micah followed with a basket off a turnover and a 3-pointer, which gave the Jayhawks their biggest lead at 18-11. Micah's second-chance basket later made it 20-16.
Lick-Wilmerding then scored 13 straight points, a run that lasted from the first quarter into the third. The visitors led 23-20 after one quarter and held Head-Royce scoreless in the second to take a 26-20 halftime lead. Bryce ended the drought with a 3-pointer that cut the deficit to 29-23, but Lick-Wilmerding kept scoring from outside. A 3-pointer made it 39-27 at the end of the third quarter, and another to open the fourth put the visitors ahead 42-27, their biggest lead of the game.
Andre answered with a 3-pointer, and after Lick-Wilmerding made it 44-30, Head-Royce scored the next 18 points. Micah began the run with a free throw and a basket, Bryce made two free throws and Andre hit another 3-pointer to make it 44-38. Micah scored on a basket and then a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 44-43. Marcel's basket gave the Jayhawks a 45-44 lead that they never gave up. Micah scored again and Marcel made a free throw for a 48-44 lead. Lick-Wilmerding scored to end the run, but Bryce made a free throw and Christian finished the scoring with a basket on a Bryce assist. Head-Royce outscored the visitors 24-7 in the fourth quarter.
Micah led all Head-Royce scorers with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range, and had a steal. He scored 10 points during the 18-0 run. Andre added 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and made 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Bryce had 8 points, made 5 of 6 free throws and had three of the team's five assists. Uche Okereke went 2 for 2 from the field for 4 points, and both baskets were second-chance points. He also had three blocks. Marcel had 4 points and a team-high six rebounds, and Osagie grabbed four offensive rebounds.
Head-Royce shot 58 percent from the field (18 of 31) and made 7 of 14 3-pointers. The Jayhawks had 11 offensive rebounds and six second-chance points, and they scored six points off turnovers while committing only six turnovers. They made 8 of 18 free throws. Lick-Wilmerding shot 81 percent (17 of 21) and made 8 of 9 3-pointers. Its No. 22 scored 17 points and made 5 of 6 from 3-point range, and No. 3 added 9 points.
Head-Royce is 4-0 this season.
