OAKLAND, Calif. The Head-Royce Boys JV opened the 2026 summer season with a 67-21 win over International JV on Sunday. The Jayhawks had 18 steals, turned them into 26 points off turnovers and never trailed. The win moves Head-Royce to 1-0.
Head-Royce scored the first nine points of the game. Naz hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Owen. Makaio and Owen each scored off turnovers, and Makaio added a second-chance basket to make it 9-0. International JV got within 16-7, but John answered with a 3-pointer set up by Naz. The visitors made two free throws to cut the lead to 19-9, and Head-Royce answered with an 18-0 run that decided the game.
Alex D. started the run with two free throws. Owen then scored off turnovers on back-to-back possessions, and Alex D. added a basket off another turnover. John and Makaio both scored on passes from Alex D., Makaio made two free throws, and Owen and John closed the run with baskets off turnovers for a 37-9 lead. Owen scored off another turnover late in the first half, and Head-Royce led 41-13 at halftime.
The second half picked up where the first left off. Naz opened it with a 3-pointer on a pass from Makaio, and Owen scored nine points in a 14-0 run that began before halftime and pushed the lead to 53-13. After Makaio's second-chance basket made it 55-17, John scored three straight baskets, two of them off turnovers, in a 6-0 run to 61-17. Makaio added another second-chance basket, Azaan scored on a pass from John, and Owen scored off a turnover on the final basket of the game, which gave Head-Royce its biggest lead at 46 points.
Makaio and Owen each scored a team-high 19 points. Makaio made 8 of 9 shots from the field and all three of his free throws, and he added seven rebounds (five offensive), two assists and two steals. Owen made 9 of 15 shots and added six steals and three assists with one turnover. John scored 13 points off the bench and had six steals and two assists. Alex D. had eight points, made all four of his free throws and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Naz made two 3-pointers for six points and had three assists, and Azaan grabbed four rebounds and made two steals.
Head-Royce shot 54.9 percent (28 of 51) and made all eight of its free throws. The Jayhawks committed only two turnovers and forced 21. International JV shot 27.6 percent (8 of 29), made 1 of 11 3-pointers and did not score a point off a turnover. Head-Royce also outrebounded International JV 26-14 and had 13 assists to the visitors' three.
The Jayhawks are 1-0 on the summer season.
