OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce never trailed and dominated the boards in a 49-32 win over Alameda JV on Sunday, June 14, improving the Jayhawks to 2-0 in the 2026 summer season. Head-Royce outrebounded Alameda JV 34-8, grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and made all 21 of its free throws.
The Jayhawks opened with a 6-0 run. Waylon made two free throws, Owen scored off a turnover on a pass from Alex D., and Waylon added a basket on another Alex D. assist. Alameda JV answered with a 6-0 run of its own, scoring on a basket off a turnover, a field goal and four straight free throws to tie the game at 8-8. That was the only tie of the game.
Head-Royce responded with a 9-0 run. John hit a 3-pointer off an Alex D. assist, and Waylon scored the next six points on four free throws and a second-chance basket to make it 17-8. Alameda JV made four straight free throws, but Owen scored a second-chance basket, and Head-Royce took a 19-14 lead into halftime.
The Jayhawks scored the first six points of the second half. Azaan made two free throws, and Waylon added a basket and two more free throws for a 25-14 lead. Alameda JV never got closer than nine points after that. Alex D. scored a second-chance basket and Azaan scored on an Owen assist to make it 33-20. Alameda JV hit two 3-pointers in the half, but Head-Royce answered each time. Leading 40-28, the Jayhawks closed with a 9-0 run. Azaan made two free throws, and Makaio scored the final seven points of the run: two free throws, a basket off a turnover on a John assist and a 3-pointer from Azaan that made it 49-28, Head-Royce's largest lead. Alameda JV scored the last four points.
Waylon led Head-Royce with 18 points and nine rebounds, seven of them offensive. He shot 4 of 8 from the field, went 10 for 10 at the line and scored 12 of his points in the first half. Azaan scored all nine of his points after halftime, going 5 for 5 at the line, and added four rebounds. Makaio finished with seven points and five rebounds. Owen had six points and five rebounds, and John had five points and four rebounds, all offensive. Alex D. scored four points and had six rebounds and team highs of three assists and two steals.
The Jayhawks shot 30.2 percent (13 of 43), but second chances and free throws made up the difference. Head-Royce outscored Alameda JV 8-0 on second-chance points. Alameda JV committed 18 fouls, and Head-Royce went 21 for 21 at the line while Alameda JV went 14 for 14. Alameda JV shot 28.6 percent (8 of 28) and made 2 of 12 3-pointers. Head-Royce committed six turnovers to Alameda JV's five, and Alameda JV held a 6-4 edge in points off turnovers.
Head-Royce improved to 2-0 and has won two straight.
