OAKLAND, Calif. Micah Riebel scored 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting, and Head-Royce outshot La Habra High by a wide margin to earn a 56-52 summer league win Sunday, June 30, improving to 12-6.
The Jayhawks scored first on a basket by Micah Nyamuzuwe, assisted by Bryce Clepper, and led 13-9 after Nyamuzuwe hit a 3-pointer on a pass from Riebel. La Habra High answered with a 10-0 run, helped by three straight free throws and a 3-pointer off a turnover, and took its biggest lead at 19-13.
Head-Royce responded with a 14-0 run that swung the game. Riebel scored the first seven points, and his basket off a turnover tied the score 19-19. Andre Iguodala II followed with eight straight points, including a 3-pointer assisted by Riebel and a basket off a turnover, and his free throw made it 27-19, the Jayhawks' largest lead.
La Habra High came back with a 7-0 run to pull within 27-26, and the game stayed close the rest of the way. Back-to-back 3-pointers gave the visitors a 32-29 edge before Iguodala tied it with a 3-pointer and Nyamuzuwe put Head-Royce ahead 35-32 with another. La Habra High then scored seven straight, six on free throws, to lead 39-36. Riebel tied it with a 3-pointer, but a second-chance 3-pointer put La Habra High back in front, 42-39.
Head-Royce's 8-0 run settled it. Sanjay Ernst tied the score with a 3-pointer off a Riebel assist, Riebel scored on a putback, and he followed with a 3-pointer off a turnover for a 47-42 lead. La Habra High tied it for the eighth and final time at 49-49, but Riebel scored to regain the lead, Alex Jones scored on a feed from Jack Peay, and Iguodala made two free throws for a 55-49 margin. A late La Habra High 3-pointer cut it to three before Riebel's free throw closed the scoring.
Riebel finished with 25 points, going 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 5-of-7 at the line, and added five rebounds, five assists and a steal. Iguodala, a senior, added 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, went 3-for-3 at the line and had four rebounds, a steal and a block. Nyamuzuwe, also a senior, scored eight points on two 3-pointers. Peay, a sophomore, had two points, five rebounds, two assists and a block, and Ernst scored three points off the bench.
Shooting decided the game. Head-Royce made 20 of 42 shots (48 percent) and 7 of 14 from 3-point range, while La Habra High made 17 of 58 (29 percent) and 7 of 27 from deep. The Jayhawks had 12 assists on their 20 baskets and outscored La Habra High 11-3 in points off turnovers. La Habra High won the rebounding battle 28-22, including 11 offensive rebounds, but turned them into just seven second-chance points.
Head-Royce is now 12-6 in the 2024 summer season.
