De La Salle shot 59.5 percent from the field and controlled the glass, handing Head-Royce a 57-43 loss in summer play Wednesday. The Jayhawks fell to 9-4 and have lost two straight.

De La Salle scored the first 6 points of the game before Jack Peay broke through with a basket off a Bryce Clepper assist. The visitors pushed the lead to 12-4, but Head-Royce answered with second-chance baskets from Peay and Micah Nyamuzuwe. Down 15-8 and later 17-8, the Jayhawks hit three straight 3-pointers, from Andre Iguodala II, Peay and Micah Riebel, to pull within 19-17. Clepper then made two free throws to tie the game at 19, the only tie of the night.

The tie did not last. De La Salle answered with a 3-pointer and a basket off a turnover, and after a Peay layup off an Iguodala assist cut the gap to 24-21, the visitors scored 11 straight points to lead 35-21. Head-Royce never led, and it could not get closer than five from there.

The Jayhawks made one more push. Trailing 44-31, they scored 8 straight points: a basket by Nyamuzuwe, a basket and a free throw by Riebel, and a 3-pointer off a turnover by Nick Taubes, assisted by Lamarr Covington, that made it 44-39. De La Salle replied with a 9-0 run to go up 53-39. Clepper made two more free throws, but the visitors scored the next 4 points to take their largest lead at 57-41. Iguodala scored the final basket of the game on a layup off a turnover, assisted by Riebel.

Riebel led Head-Royce with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and added three steals and two assists. Peay, a sophomore, scored 9 points on 4-of-6 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, four of them offensive. Iguodala, a senior, had 7 points, two blocks and two steals. Clepper, also a senior, scored 7 points, went 5-of-5 at the free-throw line and had two assists. Nyamuzuwe, a senior, added 6 points, and Taubes scored 3 points off the bench. Covington had two assists.

Rebounding decided the game. De La Salle held a 30-13 edge on the boards, including nine offensive rebounds, and outscored Head-Royce 9-4 on second-chance points. The visitors made 25 of 42 shots, while the Jayhawks made 16 of 45 (35.6 percent). Both teams made five 3-pointers, but Head-Royce needed 20 attempts to De La Salle's 17. De La Salle also had 14 assists to the Jayhawks' eight.

The Head-Royce defense kept the game within reach. The Jayhawks had 12 steals, forced 14 turnovers and held a slim 11-10 edge in points off turnovers. They also went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Head-Royce is now 9-4 this summer.
