OAKLAND, Calif. Lowell turned offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points and never trailed Friday, beating Head-Royce 61-46 and dropping the Jayhawks to 6-3 this summer.
Lowell opened the scoring with a second-chance 3-pointer. Nick Taubes answered with a second-chance basket set up by Tucker Peay, then scored again to make it 5-4, the closest Head-Royce got the rest of the way. Lowell followed with a 7-0 run built on a 3-pointer, a second-chance basket and a basket off a turnover to go up 12-4, and it pushed the lead to 17-6 soon after.
The Jayhawks fought back. Taubes hit a 3-pointer from Loryan Boyette-Tindall, Waylon Miller scored twice from the field and Taubes added a basket off a turnover to cut the deficit to 19-13. Sanjay Ernst then scored seven points in a short stretch, including two baskets on feeds from Taubes, and his last one made it 26-22. Lowell closed the half with a 3-pointer and a basket for a 31-22 halftime lead.
Boyette-Tindall scored the first basket of the second half, but Lowell answered with another 7-0 run. All seven of those points were second-chance points, and they stretched the lead to 38-24. Taubes answered with a basket and a 3-pointer to make it 38-29, and Jack Peay's 3-pointer from Boyette-Tindall later made it 43-34. Head-Royce couldn't get closer. Lowell scored seven of the next nine points to lead 52-38, then went up 57-40 with a second-chance basket and a 3-pointer, its largest lead of the game. The Jayhawks closed with a basket by Jack Peay and free throws from Miller and Azaan.
Taubes led Head-Royce with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range, and added three assists, a steal and no turnovers. Ernst scored 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting and made all five of his free throws. Miller scored 8 points off the bench, going 2 for 4 from the field and 4 for 4 at the line, with a steal and a block. Jack Peay had 5 points and four rebounds. Boyette-Tindall grabbed five rebounds, four of them offensive, and added two assists and two blocks. Tucker Peay pulled down four rebounds, three on the offensive glass.
Both teams took 45 shots, but Lowell made 22 of them (48.9 percent) to Head-Royce's 16 (35.6 percent). The biggest gap came from beyond the arc: Lowell made 9 of 20 from 3-point range, while the Jayhawks made 3 of 22, a 27-9 edge in points from deep. Each team had nine offensive rebounds, but Lowell won the overall battle 25-18 and outscored Head-Royce 17-4 on second chances. Lowell also finished with 15 assists to Head-Royce's eight. The Jayhawks protected the ball well, committing just three turnovers, and made all 11 of their free throws. Each team scored two points off turnovers, and the Head-Royce bench added 10 points.
Head-Royce is now 6-3 this summer.
