OAKLAND, Calif. De La Salle never trailed and used a 9-0 second-half run to pull away from Head-Royce for a 48-30 win Sunday, handing the Jayhawks their first loss of the 2026 summer season. Head-Royce (4-1) was outshot 52.9 percent to 40 percent. De La Salle scored 17 points on second chances and turnovers, and the Jayhawks scored none in either category.
De La Salle opened with a 6-0 run that included a basket off a turnover and a pair of free throws. Jack Peay answered with a 3-pointer on an assist from Nick Taubes, and Taubes followed with a basket to make it 6-5, the closest Head-Royce would get. De La Salle then scored six straight, including a second-chance 3-pointer, to lead 12-5. The Jayhawks chipped back with free throws from Jack Peay and Owen Sunwoo, and a Taubes basket plus a Jack Peay basket assisted by Tucker Peay cut the deficit to 14-12. After two Tucker Peay free throws made it 19-16, De La Salle hit a 3-pointer and a basket to take a 24-16 lead into halftime.
De La Salle scored first after the break to finish a 7-0 run and lead 26-16. Tucker Peay made three straight free throws, but De La Salle answered with a 3-pointer and a basket off a turnover, and two more 3-pointers pushed the margin to 37-20. Taubes then gave Head-Royce its best stretch, scoring three straight baskets, the first on an assist from Alex Dornbusch, to make it 37-26. De La Salle responded with the decisive 9-0 run, built on three free throws, two second-chance baskets and a basket off a turnover, to take its largest lead at 46-26. Waylon Miller and Sunwoo each made a pair of free throws late, around another De La Salle second-chance basket, to set the final.
Taubes led Head-Royce with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting, accounting for six of the team's eight field goals, and added two rebounds, an assist and a block. Jack Peay scored seven points on 2-of-3 shooting, including the team's only 3-pointer, and had three rebounds and a steal. Tucker Peay scored all six of his points at the line, going 6 of 8, and led the team with six rebounds, two of them offensive, and two steals. Off the bench, Sunwoo, a junior guard, went 3 for 3 at the line and Miller made both of his attempts, as the reserves combined for five points.
Shot volume told much of the story. Head-Royce attempted 20 field goals to De La Salle's 34 and went 1 of 10 from 3-point range, while De La Salle made 5 of 15 from deep. The Jayhawks made 13 of 15 free throws, which accounted for 13 of their 30 points. De La Salle won the rebounding battle 16-13, including 6-4 on the offensive glass, and turned those extra chances into nine second-chance points. De La Salle also held a 9-3 edge in assists.
Ball security was the other difference. Head-Royce committed 11 turnovers to De La Salle's six, and De La Salle converted those into eight points.
Head-Royce is now 4-1 this summer after opening the season with four straight wins.
