OAKLAND, Calif. Arroyo grabbed 12 offensive rebounds and turned them into 15 second-chance points on Wednesday, beating Head-Royce 52-43 in a summer game. The Jayhawks shot better from the field and made more 3-pointers, but they never led and fell to 5-2.
Arroyo scored the first five points and led 15-6 after the first quarter. Jack Peay scored all six Head-Royce points in the period on two 3-pointers, both assisted by Loryan Boyette-Tindall. In the second quarter, Sanjay Ernst and Waylon Miller each scored three points on a basket and a free throw, and Miller added another basket on a pass from Owen Sunwoo to make it 20-14. Arroyo answered with a 6-0 run on two free throws and two second-chance baskets to lead 26-14, and it went into halftime ahead 28-16.
Boyette-Tindall scored off a turnover to start the second half, but Arroyo pushed its lead to 31-18, its largest of the game at 13. The Jayhawks responded with a 6-0 run on back-to-back 3-pointers from Ernst and Sunwoo, both set up by Miller, to make it 31-24. Arroyo stretched the lead back to 38-26 before Peay started a 7-0 run that carried into the fourth quarter. He scored on a jumper and made three free throws, and Ernst followed with a basket to make it 38-33.
After an Arroyo basket, Peay hit a 3-pointer on a pass from Ernst to cut the deficit to 40-36, Head-Royce's closest since the first quarter. Arroyo then scored five straight points, including a basket off a turnover, to lead 45-36. Ernst answered with a 3-pointer, but Arroyo scored the next four points. Sunwoo scored the Jayhawks' final four points, the last on a 3-pointer that made it 51-43, and Arroyo closed the scoring with a free throw.
Peay led Head-Royce with 16 points and 10 rebounds, going 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. Ernst added 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and made both of his 3-point attempts, and he had two assists. Sunwoo, a junior guard, scored seven points with two 3-pointers and two assists. Miller had five points, four rebounds, two assists and a block without a turnover, and Boyette-Tindall scored four points with a team-high three assists.
Head-Royce shot 40.5 percent from the field (15 of 37) to Arroyo's 36.7 percent and made 7 of 16 3-pointers, while Arroyo made 3 of 14. Arroyo won the game on the glass and at the line. It outrebounded the Jayhawks 28-23, held a 12-4 edge on the offensive boards and outscored them 15-0 on second-chance points. Arroyo went 13 of 18 at the free-throw line, and Head-Royce went 6 of 14. The Jayhawks committed 13 turnovers but still held an 8-6 edge in points off turnovers. Their bench did not score.
The loss was Head-Royce's second of the summer and dropped the Jayhawks to 5-2.
