OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce opened its 2026 summer schedule Saturday with a 54-47 win over Washington, turning 16 Washington turnovers into 16 points and hitting 10 3-pointers to improve to 1-0.
Washington scored the first basket and went up 7-3 on a two and a 3-pointer, its biggest lead of the game. Tucker Peay hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Sanjay Ernst to cut the deficit to 7-6. Washington made two free throws for a 9-6 lead, and the Jayhawks answered with a 10-0 run. Tucker Peay made two free throws, and Alex Jones hit a 3-pointer off a turnover to put Head-Royce ahead 11-9 for the game's third and final lead change. Jack Peay followed with a 3-pointer off a turnover on a feed from Tucker Peay, then made two free throws to make it 16-9.
Washington got within four points twice but never closer after that. Alex Dornbusch hit a 3-pointer set up by Jack Peay for a 21-14 lead. Jones then made two more 3-pointers off turnovers, the second assisted by Nick Taubes, to make it 29-22, and Tucker Peay scored a second-chance basket. Washington scored the last basket of the half, and Head-Royce led 31-24 at halftime.
Taubes opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Tucker Peay, and Tucker Peay added a basket for a 36-24 lead. After Washington scored four straight points, the Jayhawks went on a 9-0 run. Taubes hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Loryan Boyette-Tindall, Tucker Peay scored inside, Ernst converted a turnover into a basket on a pass from Jones, and Taubes scored off another turnover to make it 45-28. That 17-point margin was Head-Royce's largest of the game. Washington answered with an 8-0 run to get within 45-36, but a team basket and Tucker Peay's 3-pointer from Jones pushed the lead back to 50-36. Jones and Waylon Miller, the latter on an assist from Jones, scored the Jayhawks' final points for a 54-40 lead. Washington closed with seven straight points, but Head-Royce held on.
Tucker Peay led Head-Royce with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. He added six rebounds, four assists and two steals without a turnover. Jones scored 14 points on four 3-pointers, three of them off turnovers, and added four rebounds and three assists. Taubes had eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from long range, and Ernst had five rebounds and two steals. Jack Peay led the bench with six points, including 3 of 4 at the line, and the reserves combined for 12 points.
The Jayhawks shot 38.8 percent from the field (19-49) and 10 of 23 from 3-point range. Washington shot better from the field at 44.7 percent (17-38) but made only 4 of 13 from beyond the arc, so Head-Royce held a 30-12 edge in points from 3-pointers. Head-Royce had nine steals and forced 16 turnovers while committing 10, and it outscored Washington 16-3 in points off turnovers. The Jayhawks also won the rebounding battle 23-18, including 10-5 on the offensive glass.
Head-Royce improved to 1-0 on the summer with the win.
