OAKLAND, Calif. Jack Peay made two free throws to put Head-Royce back in front, and Waylon Miller added one more as the Jayhawks held off Redwood Christian 47-45 on Monday night to improve to 5-1 this summer. Head-Royce won on the offensive glass, pulling down 12 offensive rebounds to Redwood Christian's one and scoring 10 second-chance points while the visitors had none.
Tucker Peay opened the scoring with a 3-pointer off a pass from Jack Peay, and Miller scored inside and then made a free throw for an 8-2 lead. Head-Royce led 10-4 after one quarter. Redwood Christian cut the gap to 10-9, but Owen Sunwoo hit back-to-back 3-pointers, both set up by Loryan Boyette-Tindall. That 6-0 run gave the Jayhawks their largest lead at 16-9. Redwood Christian answered with seven straight points to tie it at 16. Miller scored on a putback, the visitors tied it again at 18 at the free-throw line, and Naz Khan's 3-pointer off a Jack Peay assist sent Head-Royce into halftime ahead 21-18.
The third quarter swung both ways. Redwood Christian tied it at 27 with a 3-pointer off a turnover. Khan answered with another 3-pointer, but the visitors then scored five straight points and took a 32-30 lead, their largest of the night. Head-Royce responded with a 7-0 run. Sunwoo's 3-pointer from Sanjay Ernst put the Jayhawks back ahead 33-32, and second-chance baskets by Ernst and Tucker Peay pushed the lead to 37-32. Ernst added another putback, and Head-Royce took a 40-38 lead into the fourth.
Jack Peay scored the Jayhawks' first six points of the fourth quarter, making two free throws and a basket off a Boyette-Tindall assist for a 44-40 lead. Redwood Christian hit a 3-pointer and then made two free throws to go ahead 45-44. Jack Peay answered with two free throws for a 46-45 lead, and Miller's free throw closed the scoring.
Sunwoo, a junior guard, led Head-Royce off the bench with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range. Tucker Peay added 10 points and four rebounds, three of them offensive. Jack Peay had six points, went 4 for 4 at the line and added two assists. Boyette-Tindall did not score but filled the stat sheet with eight assists, seven rebounds, five steals and a block. Miller had six points and six rebounds, Ernst had six points and four offensive rebounds, and Khan made two 3-pointers.
Head-Royce shot 32.7 percent (17 of 52) from the field and 6 of 24 from 3-point range, while Redwood Christian shot 35.9 percent and made all 12 of its free throws. The Jayhawks won the rebounding battle 31-21 and got 25 points from their bench. Redwood Christian committed 13 turnovers, nine of them on Head-Royce steals, but turned the Jayhawks' 10 turnovers into seven points while Head-Royce scored just two points off turnovers.
Head-Royce bounced back from its only loss of the summer and is now 5-1.
