OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce held off a late push from Cosumnes Oaks for a 45-42 win on Sunday, June 7, and improved to 3-0 in the 2026 summer season. The Jayhawks outrebounded the visitors 28-13, including 13-2 on the offensive glass, and a 10-0 run that broke a 13-13 tie gave them a lead they never gave up.
The opening minutes went back and forth. Sanjay Ernst opened the scoring with a 3-pointer on an assist from Tucker Peay, but Cosumnes Oaks answered, and the lead changed hands three times in the early going. A Cosumnes Oaks 3-pointer made it 9-5, the visitors' largest lead of the game. Head-Royce answered with a 7-0 run. Nick Taubes hit a two and then a 3-pointer off a turnover, set up by Jack Peay, and Tucker Peay added a second-chance basket for a 12-9 lead. That was the fourth and final lead change.
Cosumnes Oaks tied it at 13 on a second-chance basket, the game's only tie, before the Jayhawks scored 10 straight. Alex Jones hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the first assisted by Ernst and the second by Taubes. Loryan Boyette-Tindall followed with two baskets off turnovers, set up by Tucker Peay and Taubes, to make it 23-13. After a Cosumnes Oaks 3-pointer, Head-Royce put together a 6-0 run on two Taubes baskets around a Tucker Peay second-chance score, taking its largest lead at 29-16.
Cosumnes Oaks kept chipping away. The visitors got within 29-21, then answered a Tucker Peay basket with a 7-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer, that cut the deficit to 31-28. Tucker Peay scored on a feed from Boyette-Tindall and Jack Peay scored on an assist from Taubes to make it 35-28. After three Cosumnes Oaks free throws, Alex Dornbusch added a second-chance basket and a free throw for a 38-31 lead, and Jack Peay made two free throws to make it 40-33. When a Cosumnes Oaks 3-pointer made it 40-36, Tucker Peay scored Head-Royce's last five points: a free throw, a basket on an assist from Jones and a second-chance basket that made it 45-39. Cosumnes Oaks hit a 3-pointer off a turnover for the final margin.
Tucker Peay posted a double-double with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting and 11 rebounds, eight of them offensive, along with two assists and a steal. Taubes added 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting with four rebounds, four assists, two steals and no turnovers. Jones, a junior guard, scored 6 points on 2-of-4 shooting from 3-point range and grabbed five rebounds. Boyette-Tindall added 4 points, and Ernst had 3 points and three rebounds. The bench added 7 points, with 4 from Jack Peay and 3 from Dornbusch.
Cosumnes Oaks shot slightly better from the field (43.8 percent to 42.9 percent) and hit 5 of 13 3-pointers and 9 of 11 free throws. Head-Royce made up the difference with extra possessions. Its 13 offensive rebounds produced 8 second-chance points to the visitors' 4. The Jayhawks committed just four turnovers, forced six and held a 7-3 edge in points off turnovers. They also had 10 assists on 18 made field goals.
Head-Royce is 3-0 and has won three straight games.
