OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce broke a 36-36 tie with seven straight points and made 14 of 16 free throws to beat Benicia 46-39 on Sunday. The Jayhawks improved to 4-0 in the 2026 summer season and have won four games in a row.
Loryan Boyette-Tindall scored the game's first basket on an assist from Nick Taubes. Benicia answered with the next four points and led 4-2, its largest lead of the day. Tucker Peay then scored eight straight points. He hit a 3-pointer, scored a basket off a turnover and added another 3-pointer off a turnover for a 10-4 lead. Benicia stayed close with its outside shooting. Three Benicia 3-pointers tied the game at 15, tied it again at 18 and then put the visitors ahead 21-19. Tucker Peay answered with a 3-pointer and a free throw, and Head-Royce led 23-21 at halftime.
Alex Jones opened the second half with a 3-pointer off a turnover. That finished a 7-0 run and made it 26-21. After Benicia cut the lead to one, Boyette-Tindall hit a 3-pointer and Tucker Peay scored off a turnover for a 31-25 lead. Benicia scored the next four points, and its 3-pointer tied the game at 32. Taubes put Head-Royce back in front with a second-chance basket, but Benicia tied it at 34 and took a 35-34 lead on a free throw. Boyette-Tindall's basket regained the lead, and a Benicia free throw tied the game at 36, the sixth and final tie.
Jack Peay broke the tie from the free throw line. He made four straight free throws for a 40-36 lead. Taubes followed with another second-chance basket, and Boyette-Tindall added a free throw. That finished a 7-0 run and gave Head-Royce a 43-36 lead, the largest for either team. Benicia got no closer than five points the rest of the way, and Jack Peay made two free throws to close the scoring.
Tucker Peay led Head-Royce with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range. He also made 2 of 3 free throws and had a steal. Boyette-Tindall scored nine points on 3-of-5 shooting and made both of his free throws. Taubes ran the offense with eight points, six assists and four rebounds without a turnover. Jack Peay scored all seven of his points at the line, going 7 of 8 off the bench. Jones, a junior guard, made two 3-pointers for six points and had two steals. Waylon Miller added a free throw and a blocked shot.
The two teams shot almost the same from the field. Benicia made 14 of 31 shots and Head-Royce made 13 of 29, or 45 percent. Benicia also won the rebounding battle 14-12 and grabbed six offensive rebounds. Head-Royce won the game at the free throw line and by protecting the ball. The Jayhawks outscored Benicia 14-6 at the line, committed only four turnovers and forced nine. That gave Head-Royce a 10-2 edge in points off turnovers. The Jayhawks made 6 of 14 3-pointers, and their bench scored eight points.
Head-Royce is now 4-0 after its fourth straight win.
