OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce forced 17 Live Oak turnovers and beat the visitors 50-39 Saturday to improve to 2-0 in the 2026 summer season. The Jayhawks scored 12 points off those turnovers, and Live Oak scored none off Head-Royce's mistakes.
Live Oak opened with a free throw and two second-chance baskets to lead 5-1, its biggest lead of the game. Head-Royce answered with a 10-0 run. Tucker Peay hit a 3-pointer on a pass from Nick Taubes and then scored a second-chance basket, assisted by Loryan Boyette-Tindall, to make it 6-5. That was the game's only lead change. Boyette-Tindall added a basket and a free throw, and Taubes finished a pass from Alex Jones after a turnover to make it 11-5. Waylon Miller later scored three points and Alex Dornbusch added a basket for a 22-13 lead. Live Oak hit a second-chance 3-pointer before the break, and Head-Royce led 22-16 at halftime.
Live Oak opened the second half with a 3-pointer and a basket, finishing an 8-0 run that cut the lead to 22-21. Head-Royce never trailed again. Its next four baskets all came off turnovers. Tucker Peay scored first on a pass from Jones, Taubes and Sanjay Ernst followed, and a second Taubes basket made it 30-25. Live Oak hit 3-pointers to get within 30-28 and 32-31, and Jones answered the second one with a second-chance 3-pointer, assisted by Taubes, for a 35-31 lead. Baskets by Tucker Peay and Taubes and two free throws by Jack Peay made it 41-34. Live Oak made three straight free throws to cut the lead to 41-37, but Jones hit a 3-pointer, Jack Peay scored off a turnover and Jones hit another 3-pointer for a 49-39 lead. A free throw by John Wheeler closed the scoring and gave the Jayhawks their biggest lead, 11 points.
Jones, a junior guard, led the bench with 11 points. He shot 4 of 6 from the field, made 3 of 5 from 3-point range and added three steals, three rebounds and two assists. Tucker Peay also scored 11 points, making 5 of 13 shots, with four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Taubes added 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting and had a team-high three assists. Jack Peay grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and scored four points. Ernst had five points on 2-of-3 shooting and four rebounds, and Miller pulled down four rebounds, three of them offensive.
Head-Royce shot 43 percent from the field (20 of 47), and Live Oak shot 35 percent (12 of 34). Live Oak went 11 of 21 from the free-throw line, while the Jayhawks went 6 of 8, but Head-Royce made eight more field goals. The Jayhawks committed eight turnovers to Live Oak's 17 and had seven steals. Head-Royce also won the rebounding battle 28-22, with 11 offensive rebounds, and its bench scored 21 points.
With the win, Head-Royce is 2-0 and has won two straight games.
