Head-Royce falls to St. Joseph Notre Dame, 54-18

St. Joseph Notre Dame had 28 steals and forced 39 Jayhawk turnovers, using four scoring runs to pull away at Head-Royce.

OAKLAND, Calif. St. Joseph Notre Dame forced 39 turnovers and scored 18 points off them in a 54-18 win over Head-Royce on Thursday. The Jayhawks dropped to 2-13 with their second straight loss.

Head-Royce scored first. Abigail Kim finished a feed from Osa Enabulele for a 2-0 lead, the Jayhawks' only lead of the night. St. Joseph Notre Dame tied it on a basket off a turnover, then kept going. Niyah scored twice off steals and Amynah hit a 3-pointer to finish a 9-0 run that made it 9-2. Ella Smith answered with a free throw and a second-chance basket off an assist from Emmy Mitchell, cutting the deficit to 9-5.

The Jayhawks did not score again until the visitors had put together a 16-0 run. St. Joseph Notre Dame hit consecutive 3-pointers, got six straight points from Mary and closed the burst with a 3-pointer and a basket from Amynah for a 25-5 lead. Laila Jagusch broke the run with a layup off a turnover, assisted by Kim, but St. Joseph Notre Dame scored the next seven points to lead 32-7.

Kim made four straight free throws to pull Head-Royce within 32-11. St. Joseph Notre Dame then went on a 12-0 run, with Amynah, Haromi, Jada and Aja all scoring, to build a 44-11 lead. Kim followed with two more free throws and a basket off an assist from Bella Spencer. Missgana B. added a free throw late, and Kim scored the game's final basket to close at 54-18. The visitors' largest lead was 38.

Kim led Head-Royce with 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting and made all six of her free throws. She also had three rebounds and an assist. Smith recorded 12 rebounds, four on the offensive glass, along with three points and a block. Mitchell had five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. Kara Waldrop added two blocks and three rebounds, and Jagusch had two points, three rebounds and a steal.

Head-Royce outrebounded St. Joseph Notre Dame 48-35 and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, but ball security decided the game. St. Joseph Notre Dame finished with 28 steals and outscored the Jayhawks 18-2 in points off turnovers. Head-Royce shot 5 of 35 (14.3 percent) from the field and 8 of 14 from the free throw line, while St. Joseph Notre Dame shot 30.3 percent and made seven 3-pointers. Amynah led all scorers with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Niyah added 10 points and four steals.

It was the second meeting of the season between the teams. St. Joseph Notre Dame also won the first, 27-10, at home on Jan. 13. Head-Royce is now 2-13 this season.
