Head-Royce falls to De La Salle 57-36 at home

De La Salle turned 15 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points and used an early 13-0 run to take control.

OAKLAND, Calif. De La Salle controlled the boards and broke the game open with a 13-0 run in the opening stretch, handing Head-Royce a 57-36 loss on Friday. The Jayhawks fell to 2-2 after being outrebounded 34-19, and De La Salle turned 15 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points.

Head-Royce answered an early deficit and briefly led. De La Salle scored the game's first four points on a pair of second-chance baskets before Tucker Peay hit a 3-pointer off a Tua Montoya assist and followed with a basket off a Nick Taubes feed. That gave the Jayhawks a 5-4 lead, their only lead of the night. De La Salle regained the lead with a 3-pointer and a basket off a turnover, but Montoya's 3-pointer, assisted by Tucker Peay, cut it to 9-8. After Tucker Peay scored again on a pass from Montoya, Head-Royce trailed just 11-10.

De La Salle then scored 13 straight points to build a 24-10 lead. The run included two free throws, a 3-pointer and back-to-back second-chance baskets. Taubes ended the drought with a basket and added another on an assist from Ezra Goldfarb, but De La Salle answered with a 6-0 run to lead 32-14. Taubes hit a 3-pointer from Montoya to make it 32-17, and De La Salle responded with a 7-0 run, starting with a second-chance 3-pointer, to go up 39-17.

Tucker Peay hit two 3-pointers down the stretch, one on an assist from Sam Gulaid, to make it 41-23. Jack Peay scored on a pass from Taubes and later on a putback, and Montoya added two baskets. De La Salle's largest lead was 26 points, at 57-31. Head-Royce closed on a 5-0 run, with Taubes hitting a 3-pointer off a Montoya assist and Montoya making two free throws.

Tucker Peay led Head-Royce with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including 3 of 7 from 3-point range. He added six rebounds, a steal and a block. Taubes scored 10 points with four assists and two blocks, and Montoya had nine points and four assists without a turnover. Jack Peay came off the bench to score four points and grab six rebounds, five of them on the offensive end. Loryan Boyette-Tindall had two steals, and Idan Benharush blocked two shots.

The shooting numbers told much of the story. Head-Royce shot 29.8 percent (14 of 47) from the field and 6 of 24 from 3-point range, while De La Salle shot 49 percent (24 of 49). The Jayhawks forced six turnovers but did not score off any of them, and they had just two second-chance points. Head-Royce blocked seven shots and committed only eight turnovers, which De La Salle turned into two points.
