OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce wiped out a five-point deficit with a 12-0 run and never trailed again, beating Redwood Christian 79-62 on Tuesday to improve to 2-1. After falling behind 52-47, the Jayhawks outscored the visitors 32-10 the rest of the way. Tucker Peay and Jack Peay scored 22 points each as Head-Royce extended its winning streak to two games.
Head-Royce opened with a basket off a turnover by Nick Taubes and a basket by Tucker Peay for a 4-0 lead. Redwood Christian answered with two 6-0 runs to go in front 12-6, then stretched the margin to 17-10, its largest lead of the game. Idan Benharush and Jack Peay scored on back-to-back trips to start the climb back.
From there the game went back and forth, with nine lead changes and six ties. Loryan Boyette-Tindall's 3-pointer tied it at 23, and a Jack Peay free throw put Head-Royce ahead 24-23, its first lead since the opening stretch. Jack Peay later hit a 3-pointer for a 29-27 edge, but Redwood Christian kept answering. After a Taubes basket tied it at 43, Redwood Christian made 3-pointers on its next three scoring plays and led 52-47.
That was when Head-Royce took over. Tucker Peay started the 12-0 run with a basket assisted by Jack Peay, and Boyette-Tindall tied it at 52 with a 3-pointer off a Tucker Peay pass. Tucker Peay then scored off a turnover to give Head-Royce the lead, Boyette-Tindall added another basket off a turnover, and Sam Gulaid hit a 3-pointer, assisted by Jack Peay, to make it 59-52. Redwood Christian cut the gap to 59-55, but Tua Montoya, Jack Peay and Boyette-Tindall hit three straight 3-pointers, and a Tucker Peay basket capped an 11-0 run for a 70-55 lead. Tucker Peay scored eight of Head-Royce's last nine points, and the lead reached 18 at 78-60.
Tucker Peay made 11 of 15 shots from the field and added six rebounds, three assists and a block. Jack Peay scored his 22 off the bench on 7-of-12 shooting, going 2 of 4 from 3-point range and 6 of 9 at the line, and grabbed eight rebounds, six of them offensive. Boyette-Tindall added 11 points off the bench and made all three of his 3-point attempts. Montoya had seven points and a team-high seven assists without a turnover, Taubes had four points and four assists, and Gulaid grabbed seven rebounds.
Head-Royce shot 51.6 percent (33 of 64), assisted on 20 of its 33 field goals and committed only three turnovers. The Jayhawks held Redwood Christian to 35 percent shooting (21 of 60) and won the rebounding battle 34-28. Their 15 offensive rebounds helped produce a 14-8 edge in second-chance points, and the Head-Royce bench scored 39 points. Redwood Christian made 9 of 29 3-point attempts and 11 of 15 free throws.
