Head-Royce beat College Prep 89-50 on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and improved to 24-2 behind 13 3-pointers and a 42-21 edge on the boards. The Jayhawks never trailed and led by as many as 43 points.
Johnny Williams made two free throws to start the scoring and added a basket off a turnover, assisted by Marcus Lefkovits, for a 4-0 lead. College Prep tied it at 4-4, the only tie of the game, before Head-Royce answered with a 9-0 run. Williams scored twice, Lefkovits added a second-chance basket and then made a 3-pointer from Bryce Clepper for a 13-4 lead. An 8-0 run later turned a 19-12 game into 27-12, with Lefkovits scoring twice and Williams finishing it with a basket and a free throw. Williams hit a 3-pointer from Lefkovits for a 30-14 lead, Zach Gottschalk and Topher Sah each connected from long range, and Micah Riebel's second-chance basket sent Head-Royce into halftime ahead 42-23.
The Jayhawks put it away early in the second half. A free throw by Williams and three straight by Clepper pushed the lead to 46-23, and Nyamuzuwe took over from there. He made a 3-pointer off a turnover, set up by Riebel, to finish a 9-0 run, then hit two more 3-pointers during an 8-0 run that made it 57-25. Nyamuzuwe scored 14 of Head-Royce's 16 points in the stretch that took the lead from 46-23 to 62-27. Jaden Recker followed with a second-chance 3-pointer, a basket and another 3-pointer, and Head-Royce led 71-32 after three periods. Gottschalk's final 3-pointer, assisted by Mikael Akpala, made it 89-46 for the largest lead of the night.
Williams led all Head-Royce scorers with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting and added six rebounds and four steals without a turnover. Micah Nyamuzuwe had 16 points, going 4 of 5 from 3-point range, with six rebounds and two assists. Lefkovits finished with nine points, three assists and three blocks, Clepper had seven points on 5-of-6 free throw shooting with three assists, and Riebel added four points and three steals.
The bench outscored College Prep's second-half total on its own with 36 points. Marcel Pierre-Louis had nine points and five rebounds, Recker scored nine with two 3-pointers, and Gottschalk made 3 of 6 from long range for nine points. Sah added seven points and seven rebounds, five on the offensive glass. Ten players scored for Head-Royce.
The Jayhawks shot 43.7 percent from the field and 13 of 28 from 3-point range, while College Prep shot 31.9 percent and made 2 of 15 from deep. Head-Royce grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, which led to a 19-4 advantage in second-chance points. The Jayhawks had 15 assists, committed only five turnovers and held a 13-2 edge in points off turnovers. College Prep kept pace at the line, making 18 of 22 free throws.
Head-Royce outscored College Prep 47-27 in the second half and is now 24-2 on the season.
